The Marquesan soul on the waterfront

When you arrive in Nuku Hiva, it's always via the great Taiohae Bay, a majestic curve where the mountains plunge into the ocean. The capital of the Marquesas is no city — it's a village strung along the waterfront, animated by a few guesthouses, food trucks and the smiles of the locals. You stroll along the pier, watch the outriggers and sailboats at anchor, stop for a fresh juice at the small market.

Notre-Dame Cathedral is an absolute must — built with stones from each island of the archipelago, it houses impressive wooden sculptures. Tiki stand silently at the entrance. The craft market is another essential stop: remarkably fine woodcarvings, bone jewellery, hand-decorated tapa. In the evening, the food trucks set up along the waterfront — Tahitian raw fish, roasted goat, grilled skewers, facing a sunset that sets the bay ablaze.

An initiatory experience in Hakaui Valley

The Vaipo waterfall, at 350 metres high, is the tallest waterfall in all of French Polynesia. To reach it, you leave Taiohae by sea in a small pirogue to Hakatea Bay — already a grandiose setting with its vertiginous cliffs. The hike traverses Hakaui Valley: traditional gardens of banana trees and taro, vestiges of paepae (ancient stone platforms), petroglyphs carved into the rock, and immense banyan trees whose aerial roots form natural cathedrals.

At the foot of the waterfall, silence falls naturally. The eye is drawn upward, hypnotised by this curtain of water bursting from the mountain. It's not just a hike — it's a face-to-face with the raw power of the Marquesas.

The great Marquesan circuit

This is the excursion we did with Pension Kena Family — and without doubt the best way to discover the soul of Nuku Hiva in one day. Early morning departure from Taiohae by 4x4. Through Hooumi, then Taipivai — the valley where writer Herman Melville once stayed. Stop at the craft centre and the Te Aìtua site, steeped in history.

The road continues to Kamuihei, dominated by an immense banyan with tentacular roots. Mysterious petroglyphs, tiki, paepae — a place with an almost mystical aura. Then the viewpoints of Aakapa, where the eye plunges over abrupt cliffs and the ocean crashing below. Finally, Hatiheu and a typical Marquesan lunch at Yvonne's — an unmissable moment.

Anaho Bay is one of the most beautiful places in all of French Polynesia. Unlike most Marquesan coastlines — abrupt and dark — Anaho hides one of the archipelago's rare white sand beaches, protected, peaceful, almost unreal. You walk there via a mountain trail with splendid panoramas over the northern bays. The return is by boat.

What makes this day unique is the people who bring it to life. Pricille, Nelson and Korail shared nothing but joy with us — their culture, their smiles, their natural way of inhabiting this place with genuine generosity. Underwater, the snorkelling is among the finest in Nuku Hiva: tropical fish, living corals, turtles. Simple, magical, and it stays with you for a long time.

The most photographed bay in the Marquesas

Among the most emblematic places in Nuku Hiva, Hatiheu Bay holds a special place. On approach, you're immediately struck by the dramatic beauty: basalt spires rise from the ground like immense black teeth, reaching skyward. The surroundings shelter some of the island's greatest archaeological sites — Paepae Paeke, a vast stone platform surrounded by tiki, and the Kamuihei site under its immense banyan, with its mysterious petroglyphs and tiki.

In Hatiheu, you sit down to a typical Marquesan lunch at Yvonne's — one of the most renowned tables in the entire archipelago. Tahitian raw fish in coconut milk, roasted goat or breadfruit baked in the traditional oven. Simple, generous, unforgettable.

The best way to take in the whole island

If there's one ideal way to grasp the sheer scale of Nuku Hiva, it's a 4x4 safari. From the first kilometres, the road climbs the mountainside. The landscape changes quickly: coconut palms and banana trees give way to the pine forests of Toovii Plateau, a surprisingly European-looking setting. Then, tilting over the other side, the eye plunges into spectacular valleys.

The safari passes through isolated villages, archaeological sites and viewpoints over secret bays. Local guides share stories about traditions, tattoos and ancestral navigation. At noon, a traditional lunch at a local table d'hôte. The day ends with a head full of contrasting images: valley greenery, deep blue ocean, the harshness of the mountains, the warmth of the encounters.

Marine life unlike anywhere else in French Polynesia

The reference dive centre in Nuku Hiva is Nuku Dive. Protected from the prevailing winds, the dive sites are located along the south coast of the island. Without a reef barrier, Nuku Hiva offers exceptionally varied topography: walls, seamounts, rocky rubble, caves — a diversity rare in French Polynesia.

The marine life of the Marquesas is very different from the rest of French Polynesia — with the reef manta ray and the scalloped hammerhead shark as the stars. The various habitats shelter a multitude of fish species (perch, jack, tuna, barracuda, fusilier, moray eel, pipefish), crustaceans (sea urchin, lobster, shrimp), octopus and nudibranchs. Every dive is a face-to-face with a raw, preserved ocean.

For non-divers, snorkelling at Anaho Bay is already beautiful — calm water, colourful fish, curious turtles.

The unexpected face of Nuku Hiva

Nuku Hiva hides a surprising side: the Toovii Plateau, at over 800 metres altitude. Pine and eucalyptus forests, vast green meadows, cooler air — an almost pastoral setting that surprises after the tropical valleys. This is where the 2-hour hike to Aakapa village begins, organised by Kena Family.

The trail winds along ridges with spectacular views over valleys plunging toward the ocean. Free-roaming horses sometimes accompany hikers — an image that perfectly captures the Marquesan spirit. In Aakapa, a peaceful village almost frozen in time, before returning to Taiohae along the coastal road.

Tiki, tapa and bone jewellery

In the Marquesas, craftsmanship is not a tourist souvenir — it's a living cultural expression. Woodcarvings in tou or miro wood represent tiki, decorated paddles and everyday objects elevated by traditional motifs. Tapa — vegetable cloth made from beaten bark, decorated with geometric patterns — retains strong symbolic value. Bone, seed and shell jewellery echoes the motifs of Marquesan tattooing.
