Guide by French Polynesia residents Raiatea & Taha'a — shared lagoon Updated 2026

Raiatea is the island most travellers sail past — or skip entirely. That's a mistake. The sacred island of French Polynesia is home to the only UNESCO World Heritage site in the South Pacific, the only navigable river in all of French Polynesia, some of the best hiking in the Society Islands, and a shared lagoon with Taha'a of extraordinary beauty. It's underrated, authentic, and not yet overrun by mass tourism — exactly what makes it one of our strongest recommendations for anyone seeking a real Polynesia experience.

Cruise ship passengers: Raiatea is one of the most rewarding ports of call in French Polynesia. The lagoon boat tour, the UNESCO marae and the Faaroa River kayak are all easily done in a day — see our dedicated section below.

Raiatea — the Sacred Underrated Island of the Leeward Islands

Raiatea in the Society Islands

Raiatea is part of the Society Islands (Îles de la Société) — the main archipelago of French Polynesia, which also includes Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Huahine, Taha'a and Maupiti. It is the second largest island in the Society Islands after Tahiti, and culturally the most significant of the entire group. Together with Taha'a, which shares its lagoon, it forms a natural pair that is best explored as a combined 3 to 4-night stay.

Our honest take · French Polynesia residents

Raiatea is not a postcard island. No long white sand beach accessible from your hotel, no overwater bungalow strip. That's not what it offers — and that's not why we recommend it. Raiatea is an island of culture, hiking, sailing and authenticity. It's the largest of the Leeward Islands after Bora Bora, and culturally the most significant in all of French Polynesia.

What makes Raiatea unique is its shared lagoon with Taha'a. Both islands coexist in the same lagoon — meaning every boat excursion from Raiatea lets you discover Taha'a in the same day. Coral garden, vanilla, pearls, deserted motus, snorkeling with rays and sharks — all from the same dock. And at night, you sleep in Raiatea, an authentic island with no international resort complex in sight.

For travellers who want more than luxury and beach farniente — Raiatea is probably the Leeward Island we recommend most.

Marae Taputapuātea — the Sacred Heart of Polynesia

02 · Free entry or guided · UNESCO

The most important Polynesian sanctuary in the world

Marae Taputapuātea is the most sacred site in all of French Polynesia — and arguably the entire Pacific. Recognised as the largest and most important Polynesian sanctuary, it sits on the east coast of Raiatea, at the heart of the Polynesian Triangle. A vestige of nearly 1,000 years of māʻohi civilisation, the site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017.

Taputapuātea is not just an archaeological site — it's the birthplace of Polynesian culture. It is from here that the great Polynesian navigators set out to conquer the Pacific, reaching Hawaii, New Zealand and Easter Island. The marae houses several structures with distinct ceremonial functions. It is a place of transmission of Polynesian knowledge, songs, dances and traditions.

Entry is free — but a guided tour brings the cultural and spiritual depth of the site to life. Allow at least 2 hours on site.

Practical tip

Hiking in Raiatea — the Best Trails

Raiatea is one of the best islands in French Polynesia for hiking. It offers a unique blend of spirituality, wild nature and breathtaking panoramas. Here, you walk as much to admire the landscapes as to feel the power of Polynesian mana.

The Gabbros Walk

A short flat trail, perfect for a quick immersion in Raiatea's lush vegetation. A botanical walk through the island's forest essences, including the famous gabbros — rare rocks characteristic of the island. Accessible to all, including families with children.

The 3 Waterfalls (Tefatuaiti) ⭐ Our favourite

A genuine highlight. This hike follows a river through the heart of tropical jungle — makeshift bridges, slippery slopes, but every effort is rewarded by the arrival at three magnificent waterfalls surrounded by giant ferns and bamboo. Perfect for adventurers who love combining nature and cool water.

Mount Temehani — the sacred hike

The ascent of the sacred mountain (772m) is a unique experience. This massif is home to the famous Tiare Apetahi — an endemic flower that grows nowhere else in the world (picking strictly forbidden). Steep trail through primary forest, then the heights where you feel the island's full mana. Breathtaking views to Huahine on a clear day. Certified guide mandatory.

~6h round trip · Faatemu area · Guide mandatory
The Tiare Apetahi — the world's rarest flower

The Tiare Apetahi is a lobeliaceous flower of the Campanulaceae family — shaped like a half-corolla with five petals, it resembles no other flower in the world. It grows only between 550 and 800m altitude on Mount Temehani. Every transplantation attempt elsewhere has failed. Protected since 1996, picking and possession carry heavy fines and potential imprisonment. It is unfortunately threatened with extinction due to poaching and vandalism over the past twenty years.

The legend of the Tiare Apetahi

According to legend, a fisherman's wife, after quarrelling with her unfaithful husband, takes her own life at the summit of Mount Temehani. She first cuts off her arm, placing it in the ground with her hand facing the sky. The next morning at dawn, walkers who had spent the night on the summit are awoken by small cracking sounds… They discover white flowers shaped like open hands bursting across the plateau, covering it in white magic with an intoxicating scent. They name it Tiare Apetahi — "one side only". The husband tries a thousand times to replant a flower in his garden as a keepsake. It never blooms anywhere other than on the plateau.

Kayak on the Faaroa River — the Only Navigable River in Polynesia

04 · Half day · All levels

Paddling up the Faaroa River by kayak

The Faaroa River is the only navigable river in all of French Polynesia — and that alone makes it an unmissable activity. You set off gently from the lagoon, paddle in hand, cradled by the hypnotic blue reflections of the Leeward Islands lagoon. Gradually, you enter the river mouth… and the scenery changes completely.

The water darkens, the banks close in, and the jungle closes around you. Palm trees, hibiscus in bloom, giant ferns, majestic banyans… You feel transported into a tropical dream — wild yet accessible. No strong current, no danger — just the pleasure of gliding through preserved nature.

We recommend it 100%

An activity we recommend to all profiles — couples, families, adventurers. Peaceful, authentic, completely immersive. Perfect to combine with the visit to Marae Taputapuātea on the same day — both are on the east coast of the island.

Catamaran Cruise from Raiatea — the Leeward Islands from the Sea

05 · Multi-day · Cabin or full charter

Raiatea — the sailing hub of the Leeward Islands

Raiatea is the main departure point for catamaran cruises in the Leeward Islands. This is where the largest marinas in the archipelago are located and where the main operators base their fleet. From Raiatea, you can sail to Taha'a, Bora Bora and Maupiti — on a catamaran, at your pace, with a professional crew.

Two formats: shared cabin (from ~€1,500/person/5 days) or full charter of the catamaran for a group. Either way, the experience is exceptional — waking up every morning in a new lagoon, snorkeling from the boat, anchoring off deserted motus. The Leeward Islands from the sea is a whole different dimension.

Diving in an uncrowded lagoon

Raiatea is a more authentic and preserved diving destination than Bora Bora or Tahiti. Far from the crowds, you discover marine life of wild beauty — exceptionally clear water, intact coral reefs. Rays, colourful fish, reef sharks, barracudas. A true underwater paradise for those who want to dive without fighting for space in the water.

What to Do in Raiatea from a Cruise Ship

Raiatea is one of the most rewarding ports of call in French Polynesia for cruise ship passengers. The island is compact and well-organised for day visitors. Here's what we recommend depending on how much time you have in port.

Half day in port (3–4 hours)

Marae Taputapuātea UNESCO — 20 minutes by taxi from the dock, 2 hours on site. The most culturally significant stop in French Polynesia. Don't miss it.
Faaroa River by kayak or boat — 30–45 minutes from the dock, accessible as a guided excursion.

Full day in port (6–8 hours)

Lagoon boat tour with Are Tours or Faaroa Cruise — combine the lagoon, Faaroa River, marae and a motu. The perfect full-day excursion from the ship.
→ Add a pearl farm visit and vanilla plantation in the afternoon.

Free things to do in Raiatea from a cruise ship

The Marae Taputapuātea site is free to enter. Walking around Uturoa town centre is free. The Faaroa River bank is accessible on foot from the road. If your budget is tight, the marae visit alone — taxi there and back — is worth every penny.

Practical — getting from the dock

Cruise ships dock at Uturoa port, right in the centre of the main town. Taxis are available at the dock. The marae is 20 minutes by taxi on the east coast. For organised excursions, book in advance through your cruise line or directly with local operators — availability fills fast when multiple ships are in port simultaneously.

Practical Information — Raiatea

What to do in Raiatea when it rains

Rain showers are often short in French Polynesia. If the weather turns:

  • Diving — underwater, rain doesn't exist. Often the best time to dive, with fewer boats and different light beneath the surface.
  • Restaurants — a long lunch at Restaurant Villa Ixora or Opoa. Local cuisine, no rush.
  • Marae Taputapuātea — rain gives the sacred site a particular atmosphere. A guided visit under the clouds is even more mystical.
  • Faaroa River kayak — the jungle is even more beautiful after rain, colours saturated, river fuller. A different and equally beautiful experience.

Are there beaches in Raiatea?

Raiatea is not a beach island — that's its particularity and its charm. No long white sand beach accessible from your hotel. Our tip: choose accommodation with a private dock on the lagoon, like the Opoa Beach Hotel. You slip into the water directly from the dock — warm, crystal-clear water with a view of the marae and mountains. Different from a beach, but magnificent. For white sand, motu excursions on the lagoon deliver exactly that — a few hours on deserted beaches accessible by boat.

How far is Raiatea from Tahiti / Papeete?

Raiatea is located approximately 220 km northwest of Papeete (Tahiti). By plane, it's a 45-minute direct flight with Air Tahiti or Air Moana. By sea, the Apetahi Express ferry takes about 4 hours. Raiatea is the largest of the Leeward Islands after Bora Bora — further from Tahiti than Moorea (17 km) but much closer than the Marquesas (1,500 km).

Pearl farms in Raiatea

Raiatea is home to several black pearl farms — floating structures in the lagoon where Tahitian black pearls are cultivated. A pearl farm visit is typically included in lagoon excursions (Are Tours, Faaroa Cruise) and takes about 30 to 45 minutes. You'll see the full production process — grafting, growing, harvesting — and can purchase pearls directly from the farm at better prices than in Papeete boutiques. The Apatoa pearl farm is one of the best-known on the island.

How to book tours in Raiatea

Most excursions can be booked directly with local operators on arrival in Raiatea — but we recommend booking in advance, especially in high season (July–September) and when cruise ships are in port. Your accommodation can help with bookings and contacts. Key operators: Are Tours (lagoon & Taha'a), Faaroa Cruise (river & lagoon boat tour), dive clubs (ask your hotel for current contacts).

How to get there

Direct flight from Papeete with Air Tahiti or Air Moana — about 45 minutes. Raiatea airport (RFP) is in the north of the island, a few minutes from Uturoa. Also accessible by the Apetahi Express ferry from Papeete — about 4 hours crossing, no need to book far in advance.

Inter-island flights Air Tahiti vs Air Moana — Comparison & Passes How to choose between the two airlines and get the best deal to Raiatea.

When to visit

Best period: April to November — dry season, blue skies, calm seas. Avoid December to March (rainy season). Sweet spots: May–June and September–October for the best balance of weather, price and fewer crowds.

How long to stay

Minimum 3 nights to see the essentials (lagoon excursion, marae, hiking). 4 nights ideally to add the Faaroa River kayak and explore the island more serenely. Raiatea is naturally combined with Taha'a — both islands on the same lagoon make a complete Leeward Islands stay.

Where to stay in Raiatea

Our absolute favourite — Opoa Beach Hotel

Our top recommendation in Raiatea. The Opoa Beach Hotel has an exceptional setting — bungalows directly over the sea, facing the lagoon and Marae Taputapuātea. The view is incredible. One of the most romantic and authentic addresses in the Leeward Islands. Far from mass tourism, surrounded by nature. If you want accommodation that matches the spirit of Raiatea — this is it.

  • Apatoa — premium quality address on the island. €€€
  • Motu Nao Nao — luxury on a private island, 2km from Raiatea (shuttle included). 3 architect villas, fine sand beach, full board with local dishes, snorkeling, paddle, jet-ski, yoga and outdoor cinema. Exclusive and expensive.
  • Family pensions — for a more immersive stay, several local pensions offer excellent hospitality at very reasonable rates.

  • Restaurant Opoa — the Opoa Beach Hotel restaurant, exceptional setting facing the lagoon and marae. Unique view, quality food.
  • Restaurant Apatoa — solid local table, quality address for a good meal on the island.

Raiatea or Huahine — which one to choose?

Both are in the Leeward Islands and offer a similar experience — authentic island, beautiful lagoon, Polynesian culture. Our advice: don't do both on a short trip. Raiatea for the cultural dimension (UNESCO marae), hiking and sailing from an island hub. Huahine for the wildest and least touristy. Then change archipelago — head to the Tuamotu.

FAQ — Things to Do in Raiatea

What to do in Raiatea from a cruise ship?
Half day: visit Marae Taputapuātea UNESCO (20 min taxi from dock, 2h on site — don't miss it) + Faaroa River. Full day: lagoon boat tour with Faaroa Cruise or Are Tours (lagoon, river, marae, motu). Is Raiatea worth visiting?
Absolutely — but not for the same reasons as Bora Bora. Raiatea is French Polynesia's most culturally rich island (UNESCO marae), the only one with a navigable river, and one of the best for hiking. If you're looking for authentic Polynesia, not a luxury postcard, Raiatea is one of the islands we recommend most.
What is the best excursion in Raiatea?
For discovering Raiatea from the water: the lagoon boat tour with Faaroa Cruise (lagoon, Faaroa River, UNESCO marae, motu — optional barbecue lunch). For the lagoon tour to Taha'a: Are Tours (€130/person, coral garden, vanilla, pearls, motu lunch with Polynesian entertainment). Both are complementary and can be done on two different days.
Can you hike in Raiatea?
Yes — Raiatea is one of the best islands in French Polynesia for hiking. For all levels: Gabbros Walk (30 min, very easy), Macaranga Ridge (30 min, easy), 3 Waterfalls (4h, intermediate — our favourite), Mount Temehani (6h, difficult, guide required — home to the Tiare Apetahi, the world's rarest endemic flower).
When is the best time to visit Raiatea?
April to November — dry season, blue skies, calm seas. Avoid December to March (rainy season). Sweet spots: May–June and September–October for the best balance of weather, prices and fewer crowds.
How to get to Raiatea from Papeete?
Direct flight with Air Tahiti or Air Moana — about 45 minutes. Or the Apetahi Express ferry from Papeete — about 4 hours crossing, no need to book far in advance. Raiatea is also the hub for reaching Taha'a (30 min by boat), Bora Bora and Maupiti.
Are there beaches in Raiatea?
Raiatea is not a beach island — no long white sand beach. Our tip: choose accommodation with a private dock on the lagoon (like Opoa Beach Hotel) and take motu excursions for white sand beaches. The experience is different from a beach resort, but the lagoon swimming is just as beautiful.
