French Polynesia —
Best Trails by Island
French Polynesia is far more than lagoons and overwater bungalows. The moment you leave the coast, the islands reveal something else entirely: volcanic peaks, vertiginous waterfalls, wild valleys and panoramas over some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Pacific. From the ridges of Mont Aorai in Tahiti to the knife-edge arêtes of Moorea's Rotui, the sacred summit of Raiatea's Temehani — this guide covers the best hikes and walks across French Polynesia, organised island by island, easiest first, with honest assessments from residents.
Hiking in Tahiti — the best trails
Tahiti is far more than black-sand beaches and the urban sprawl of Papeete. The moment you leave the coast, the island shows its true character: steep volcanic mountains, vertiginous waterfalls, volcanic ridges and lush valleys. The trails are wilder here, sometimes demanding, but always spectacular.
Tahiti's lagoon seen from the heights — the reward for every hike on the island
Vaipahi Water Gardens
EasyA peaceful haven accessible to everyone. Sacred pools, endemic plants and waterfalls make this walk through lush vegetation a perfect gentle escape. Accessible, educational and refreshing — ideal with children or for a low-effort connection with Tahiti's natural world.
Fort Fachoda
IntermediateThis trail blends history and landscape. Climbing through the forest, you discover the ruins of a colonial fortification perched above Papeete harbour. The view over the port, the mountains and the ocean is outstanding. A balanced hike for those who enjoy both nature and heritage.
Mont Aorai — 2,066 m
DifficultOne of Tahiti's most iconic summits. The trail crosses vertiginous ridges and cloud forests before revealing breathtaking panoramas over the lagoon and valleys. Two mountain refuges allow the ascent to be split over two days. A must for those seeking challenge and extraordinary views — and one of the most searched hikes in all of French Polynesia.
Mont Orohena — 2,241 m (highest peak in French Polynesia)
Very DifficultThe highest point in Tahiti and in all of French Polynesia. Remote, technical and at times exposed, this volcanic summit is reserved for experienced mountaineers. It requires proper equipment, a licensed guide and serious preparation. A physically and spiritually demanding adventure — the answer to "what is the highest peak in French Polynesia."
Hiking in Moorea — the best trails
Moorea is a small mountainous jewel set in the ocean. With its sharp ridges, tropical forests and deep valleys, it's a genuine paradise for hikers. Whether you're after gentle walks or vertiginous challenges, Moorea delivers.
Mont Rotui seen from the ridges — one of the most spectacular hikes in all of Polynesia
Col des 3 Pinus (Three Pines Pass)
Very EasyA short, pleasant walk through a Caribbean pine grove — an unusual landscape for Polynesia. The trail winds gently through cool, fragrant pines to a small wooded pass. Minimal elevation gain, comfortable underfoot, with occasional glimpses over the surrounding valleys. Perfect for a morning walk or introducing children to tropical hiking. A local guide can bring the history of Moorea to life.
Col des 3 Cocotiers (Three Coconut Pass)
Easy to ModerateOne of Moorea's must-do hikes. The trail alternates dense forest, humid clearings and archaeological traces (marae, ancient paths). The climb is gradual with no major difficulties. At the top: a spectacular view over both bays and the surrounding ridges. A great outing for nature lovers and viewpoint seekers — accessible to most visitors in reasonable shape.
Mou'a Puta — "The Pierced Mountain"
IntermediateMou'a Puta means "pierced mountain" in Tahitian — and it lives up to its name. This summit with a hole through its centre is one of Moorea's symbols. The trail is demanding: steep sections, sometimes slippery rocks, but nothing insurmountable for fit hikers. At the top: Moorea opens up in all its splendour, lagoon on one side, volcanic ridges on the other. A local guide is strongly recommended for safety and cultural insight.
Mont Rotui — King of Moorea's trails
Difficult — Experienced onlyMoorea's most iconic hike. The trail follows a spectacular ridgeline between the island's two most famous bays. The route is demanding: narrow, airy, sometimes unstable and unmarked. Good footwork and excellent fitness are essential. The reward: permanent views over the void, with the lagoon, mountains and even Tahiti visible on clear days. Reserved for experienced hikers, in stable weather, with a guide if possible.
Hiking in Bora Bora — the best trails
Bora Bora is best known for its extraordinary lagoon, but the island also offers some rewarding walks. Fewer in number than Tahiti or Moorea, these hikes are worth it for their unbeatable views over the turquoise lagoon, the motus and Mont Otemanu.
The American WWII cannons — a historical walk with sweeping views over Bora Bora's lagoon
The Old American Cannons
EasyA pleasant walk that combines a slice of history (American WWII cannons) with views over Vaitape bay from above. The trail climbs gently but stays accessible to all. Perfect at sunset — one of the best walks in Bora Bora for families.
Mont Popoti & The Cross-Island Trail
EasyMont Popoti offers a gentle climb through tropical vegetation with views over the lagoon and motus. The Cross-Island Trail crosses Bora Bora's lush interior from coast to coast — ideal for an immersion in the natural landscape away from the beaches. Unmarked — bring a GPS track or ask locals for directions.
Anau Trail — Mont Pahia Viewpoint
IntermediateA lovely trail that climbs gradually to a plateau with a panoramic view over the eastern lagoon. Less frequented than other paths — perfect for those seeking a quiet adventure in nature, away from the resort side of the island.
Mont Otemanu — 727 m
Difficult — Guide recommendedBora Bora's iconic peak. The true summit requires climbing equipment and is unreachable on foot, but several trails approach its flanks and deliver breathtaking lagoon views. Slippery terrain, dense vegetation, unmarked paths — a local guide is strongly recommended. The "Mont Otemanu hike" is one of the most searched experiences in French Polynesia for photography.
Hiking in Raiatea — the best trails
Known as the sacred island of Polynesia, Raiatea is exceptional for hikers. It offers a unique blend of spirituality, wild nature and breathtaking panoramas. Here you walk as much to feel the mana of the island as to admire the scenery.
The shared lagoon of Raiatea and Taha'a seen from the heights — the reward of every hike on the sacred island
The Gabbros Walk
Very EasyA short, flat path — perfect for a quick immersion in Raiatea's lush vegetation. This botanical walk introduces a wide variety of forest species, including the distinctive gabbro rocks found only on this island. Accessible to all, including families with young children or occasional walkers.
Macaranga Ridge Trail
EasyThis little-frequented ridge trail passes through beautiful humid forest before opening onto views of the neighbouring peaks and lagoon inlets. The macaranga trees — with their broad pale-green leaves — line the path and create a soothing atmosphere. Perfect for a family outing or a morning walk.
The 3 Waterfalls (Tefatuaiti)
IntermediateA genuine favourite. This hike follows a river deep into the tropical jungle. You cross makeshift bridges, climb a few slippery slopes — but every effort is rewarded by three magnificent waterfalls surrounded by giant ferns and bamboo. Perfect for adventurers who love combining nature with a refreshing swim.
Mont Temehani — the sacred summit
Difficult — Guide mandatoryAscending Raiatea's sacred mountain is a unique experience. The massif is home to the famous Tiare Apetahi — an endemic flower that grows nowhere else on Earth (picking is strictly forbidden). The trail climbs steeply through primary forest before emerging onto heights where the island's mana is palpable. Views reach as far as Huahine on clear days. Must be done with a licensed guide — both for safety (faint, unmarked paths) and out of respect for this sacred site.
Hiking in Maupiti — the best trails
Maupiti is Bora Bora's wild little sister — and a gem for hikers seeking authenticity. No large resort complexes here, just preserved nature, grand panoramas, and trails on a human scale.
Island circuit on foot
EasyA relaxed walk along the coastal road — on foot or by bicycle. It allows a complete circuit of the main island past dream beaches, hidden marae, coconut palms and scenes of daily life. A beautiful window into the most authentic Polynesian soul, at your own pace.
Motu Auira crossing
EasyA unique and playful experience: walking through the shallow lagoon to reach Motu Auira on foot. The sandy path is submerged at high tide and walkable at low tide. A small escape between sky and sea — ideal at the end of the day for a magical sunset.
Mont Teurafaatiu — 372 m
Moderate to DifficultMaupiti's summit delivers extraordinary views. The trail is steep with several abrupt sections and a few fixed ropes on the hardest passages. At the top: a 360° panorama over the lagoon, the motus and even Bora Bora on clear days. A must for those who love sensation and grand vistas.
Safety tips & practical advice for hiking in French Polynesia
Hiking in French Polynesia delivers unforgettable experiences in spectacular landscapes — but the nature here can be as wild as it is beautiful. Tropical weather changes fast, especially in the mountains: clear skies can give way to heavy rain within minutes. Trails are often poorly or completely unmarked, and many become slippery, muddy or dangerous after rain. Accidents happen every year — most caused by poor preparation or lack of local guidance.
For hard-rated hikes (Mont Rotui, Mont Orohena, Mont Temehani, Mont Otemanu approaches), always go with a licensed local guide. These trails are unmarked, exposed and can be life-threatening in bad weather or in the event of injury. This is not an optional precaution.
| What to bring | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Hiking boots with grippy soles | Trails are often muddy and slippery — flip-flops and flat-soled trainers are dangerous |
| At least 1.5L of water per person | Heat and humidity deplete energy fast — dehydration is the primary risk on tropical mountain hikes |
| Light waterproof jacket | Rain can arrive within minutes, especially at altitude |
| Insect repellent | Mosquitoes are everywhere in forest and near rivers, especially in the morning |
| Reef-safe sunscreen | Ridges and passes are very exposed despite the surrounding humidity |
| Charged phone + offline GPS track | Trails are often unmarked — a downloaded GPX track can save your life |
| Energy snack | Hard hikes run 6 to 9 hours — bring enough food to sustain the effort |
The dry season (May–October) is ideal: trails are more passable, mountain views clearer, and the risk of flash flooding reduced. Avoid major hikes during the wet season (November–April): trails become muddy and rivers can rise dangerously fast.
