Hiking in Tahiti — the best trails

Tahiti is far more than black-sand beaches and the urban sprawl of Papeete. The moment you leave the coast, the island shows its true character: steep volcanic mountains, vertiginous waterfalls, volcanic ridges and lush valleys. The trails are wilder here, sometimes demanding, but always spectacular.

This trail blends history and landscape. Climbing through the forest, you discover the ruins of a colonial fortification perched above Papeete harbour. The view over the port, the mountains and the ocean is outstanding. A balanced hike for those who enjoy both nature and heritage.

Mont Aorai — 2,066 m

Difficult
⏱ ~9h return (or 2 days with refuge) 📍 Departure: Fare Rau Ape

One of Tahiti's most iconic summits. The trail crosses vertiginous ridges and cloud forests before revealing breathtaking panoramas over the lagoon and valleys. Two mountain refuges allow the ascent to be split over two days. A must for those seeking challenge and extraordinary views — and one of the most searched hikes in all of French Polynesia.

Mont Orohena — 2,241 m (highest peak in French Polynesia)

Minimal elevation gain, comfortable underfoot, with occasional glimpses over the surrounding valleys. Perfect for a morning walk or introducing children to tropical hiking. A local guide can bring the history of Moorea to life.

Col des 3 Cocotiers (Three Coconut Pass)

Easy to Moderate

At the top: a spectacular view over both bays and the surrounding ridges. A great outing for nature lovers and viewpoint seekers — accessible to most visitors in reasonable shape.

Mou'a Puta — "The Pierced Mountain"

Intermediate
⏱ 4h30 to 5h return 📍 Near Afareaitu

Mou'a Puta means "pierced mountain" in Tahitian — and it lives up to its name. This summit with a hole through its centre is one of Moorea's symbols. The trail is demanding: steep sections, sometimes slippery rocks, but nothing insurmountable for fit hikers. At the top: Moorea opens up in all its splendour, lagoon on one side, volcanic ridges on the other. A local guide is strongly recommended for safety and cultural insight.

Mont Rotui — King of Moorea's trails

Difficult — Experienced only
⏱ ~7h return 📍 Between Cook Bay and Opunohu Bay

Moorea's most iconic hike. The trail follows a spectacular ridgeline between the island's two most famous bays. The route is demanding: narrow, airy, sometimes unstable and unmarked. Reserved for experienced hikers, in stable weather, with a guide if possible.

The 3 Waterfalls (Tefatuaiti)

Intermediate
⏱ ~4h return 📍 Faaroa

Perfect for adventurers who love combining nature with a refreshing swim.

Mont Temehani — the sacred summit

Difficult — Guide mandatory

The trail climbs steeply through primary forest before emerging onto heights where the island's mana is palpable. Views reach as far as Huahine on clear days. Must be done with a licensed guide — both for safety (faint, unmarked paths) and out of respect for this sacred site.

Motu Auira crossing

Easy
⏱ ~1h return (tide-dependent) 📍 Southern tip of the main island — low tide only

Safety tips & practical advice for hiking in French Polynesia

Hiking in French Polynesia delivers unforgettable experiences in spectacular landscapes — but the nature here can be as wild as it is beautiful. Tropical weather changes fast, especially in the mountains: clear skies can give way to heavy rain within minutes. Trails are often poorly or completely unmarked, and many become slippery, muddy or dangerous after rain. Accidents happen every year — most caused by poor preparation or lack of local guidance.

Difficult hikes: guide mandatory

For hard-rated hikes (Mont Rotui, Mont Orohena, Mont Temehani, Mont Otemanu approaches), always go with a licensed local guide. These trails are unmarked, exposed and can be life-threatening in bad weather or in the event of injury. This is not an optional precaution.

What to bringWhy it matters
Hiking boots with grippy solesTrails are often muddy and slippery — flip-flops and flat-soled trainers are dangerous
At least 1.5L of water per personHeat and humidity deplete energy fast — dehydration is the primary risk on tropical mountain hikes
Light waterproof jacketRain can arrive within minutes, especially at altitude
Insect repellentMosquitoes are everywhere in forest and near rivers, especially in the morning
Reef-safe sunscreenRidges and passes are very exposed despite the surrounding humidity
Charged phone + offline GPS trackTrails are often unmarked — a downloaded GPX track can save your life
Energy snackHard hikes run 6 to 9 hours — bring enough food to sustain the effort
Best season for hiking

The dry season (May–October) is ideal: trails are more passable, mountain views clearer, and the risk of flash flooding reduced. Avoid major hikes during the wet season (November–April): trails become muddy and rivers can rise dangerously fast.

FAQ — Hiking in French Polynesia

Do you need to be experienced to hike in French Polynesia?
Not at all. There are trails accessible to everyone, perfect for beginners or families: the Vaipahi Water Gardens in Tahiti, the Three Pines Pass in Moorea, the WWII cannons in Bora Bora, or the island circuit in Maupiti. That said, mountain hikes like Mont Aorai, Mont Rotui or Mont Orohena require excellent fitness and are for experienced hikers only.
Can you hike alone or do you need a guide?
On marked easy trails, solo hiking is possible — especially around Tahiti and Moorea. For technical routes (Orohena, Rotui, Temehani, Otemanu approaches), a licensed local guide is essential — for safety, out of respect for sacred sites, and because trails are often unmarked and easy to lose without local knowledge.
What is the best time of year for hiking in French Polynesia?
The best period runs from May to October during the dry season. Trails are more passable, summit views are clearer and the risk of rain-related hazards (landslides, flooding rivers) is lower. Avoid major mountain hikes during the wet season (November–April).
What is the highest peak in French Polynesia?
Mont Orohena in Tahiti, at 2,241 metres, is the highest point in all of French Polynesia. Its ascent is reserved for very experienced hikers with a licensed guide — it's a technical, unmarked hike that requires serious preparation and proper equipment.
Can you hike without a guide in Raiatea?
For the easy trails (Gabbros Walk, Macaranga Ridge), yes. The Three Waterfalls trail is manageable in good fitness. However, Mont Temehani — Raiatea's most mythical hike — requires a licensed guide without exception, both for safety (faint, unmarked trails) and out of respect for this sacred site that is home to the endemic Tiare Apetahi flower.
Can families with children hike in French Polynesia?
Yes — several walks are ideal for families: the Vaipahi Water Gardens (Tahiti), Three Pines Pass (Moorea), WWII cannons (Bora Bora) or the island circuit (Maupiti). For longer or higher-altitude hikes, children should be used to walking and extra vigilance is needed on exposed sections.
