The Tahiti peninsula — or Tahiti Iti — is often overshadowed by the big names of French Polynesia. That's a mistake. This is where Teahupo'o lives: the most powerful wave on the planet, made legendary by surf competitions and the 2024 Olympic Games. But beyond the wave, the peninsula hides wild landscapes accessible only by boat, humpback whales in season, untouched mape forests and rivers, and a Polynesian authenticity that Moorea and Bora Bora have long left behind. This guide presents the 6 best activities on the peninsula — selected by Clément.

Watching the Teahupo'o Wave — from the lagoon

★ Must Do · Excellence Badge

Teahupo'o wave watching tour

By Teahupoo Tours and Surf Adventures · ~1 hour · From $128 · 91% recommended · 47 reviews

Teahupo'o is no ordinary wave. It's one of the most powerful and dangerous reef breaks in the world — a wall of water that rises just metres above a shallow coral reef, with a violence and beauty that leaves even non-surfers speechless. It hosted the surfing events of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and the world's best sessions unfold here every year during international competitions.

What's incredible from the boat is that you watch surfers riding in real time — you can film them, watch them from just a few metres away. And what few people anticipate: the visual contrast between the wave, the turquoise lagoon, the ocean and the lush green mountains of Tahiti in the background. The colour shifts with the light are breathtaking — morning and evening each give a completely different spectacle. During whale season (July–November), it's not unusual to spot humpback whales breaching behind the surfers. That's exactly what happened during the Olympic final: Kauli Vaast rode the wave of his life while whales leaped behind him. An image that became iconic.

This tour takes you directly to the spot — aboard an aluminium catamaran from Teahupo'o marina. Your captain, a Tahiti native and surfer himself, tells you everything: the history of the spot, local legends, mythical sessions. Three minutes across the lagoon and you're face to face with the wave.

Our local tip

The wave is at its best during strong south swells — between May and October. Morning light is softer, evening light turns the mountains golden. If you can, go at two different times of day. Meeting point is at Teahupo'o marina, 1h30 from Papeete — leave early on weekdays to avoid traffic.

Best for Everyone — surfers and non-surfers alike. A one-of-a-kind experience with no equivalent in French Polynesia. The #1 activity to do if you're passing through the peninsula.

Half-Day Boat Tour — Peninsula & Wild Coast

Excellence Badge · 98% recommended

Boat tour — Tahiti Iti & Fenua Aihere

By Teahupoo Tours and Surf Adventures · 3–4 hours · From $245 · Shared boat · 41 reviews

This half-day boat tour is the most complete way to explore the peninsula. Beyond Teahupo'o, the road ends — and that's where the Fenua Aihere begins, the "wild land" accessible only by boat. No road, no electricity, no network. A world apart, completely cut off from the rest of Tahiti. We've been out there: it's the total opposite of Papeete — the capital with its traffic jams, tower blocks and urban rhythm, and twenty minutes by boat, a virgin coastline where old Polynesia still exists. That contrast alone is worth the trip.

The tour combines wave watching at Teahupo'o, navigation along the Fenua Aihere with a shore stop, a walk through a mape forest (sacred Polynesian trees) at the mouth of the Vaipoiri river, river swimming, and a snorkeling session on a white-sand coral garden on the way back. A varied programme spanning sea, forest and Polynesian culture.

Best for Travelers who want to go beyond the wave and discover the roadless wild peninsula. The most complete tour in the selection.

Whale eco-tour — Tahiti peninsula

By Polyn'Easy · West Coast · Teahupo'o · 3h30–4h · Max 8 people · Photos/videos included · Manawa

From August to November, humpback whales migrate to Polynesian waters to breed and give birth. On the West Coast, off Teahupo'o, Polyn'Easy offers one of the few fully supervised and regulated eco-tours, with a licensed captain and certified guide.

The outing lasts 3h30 to 4h, in a small group of maximum 8 participants. Programme: active whale search, observation at the regulated distance, information on cetaceans and listening to male song via an on-board hydrophone. If all conditions are met — animal behaviour, weather, sea conditions — a swim with the whales is offered (maximum 6 swimmers, minimum distance of 15 metres). Photos and videos included via an Insta360 camera.

Good to know

In-water entry is not guaranteed — it depends on animal behaviour and conditions. Whales are wild and unpredictable. The activity is available August to November only. Book well ahead in high season.

Diving & Whale Swimming — Mokarran Diving, Tahiti Iti

Diving · Whales · East Coast

Mokarran Diving — Diving & whales from Taravao

By Mokarran Diving · East Coast · Start of the peninsula · Only operator · Manawa

The East Coast of Tahiti Iti — between Hitiaa and Tautira — is one of the least visited marine areas in all of French Polynesia. Mokarran Diving is the only operator working this coast, based right at the start of the peninsula. Two activities available depending on the season: exploration diving (from €180) and East Coast whale swimming (from €130, August–November) — two completely different spots and experiences from the West Coast at Teahupo'o.

Four signature dive sites. The Rose Garden — highlighted by UNESCO in 2022, it's the largest coral reef in pristine condition in the world, with rose-shaped corals (montipora foliosa, porites rus) over 3 km long. Turtles, reef sharks, heterocongers. The Totoro Pass — a wall rising from the abyss, with barracudas, jacks and schools of milkfish. The Tautira Faults — a maze of corridors and passages under rock between -6 and -20 m, ideal for green turtles and sleeping sharks. The Belvederes — a wall with two blue-water overhangs, schools of jacks and fusiliers. Groups of 4 divers maximum per guide, on 2 sites per outing.

Best for Divers of all levels (from Level 1 on most sites). Those who want to explore pristine Polynesian reefs far from the usual tourist circuits. The Rose Garden dive alone is worth the trip.

Deep-Sea Fishing in a Poti Marara — off Teahupo'o

Deep-sea fishing in a Poti Marara — Tahiti peninsula

By Stayinn Travel · ~4 hours · From $315 · 2 people minimum · Equipment included

The Poti Marara is an iconic Polynesian fishing boat — V-hull, built to handle open-ocean waves, powered by a 300 HP engine. Originally designed to catch marara (flying fish) with a landing net, it's now used for trolling, harpooning, bottom fishing and rod fishing — bonito, tuna and mahi-mahi are the usual catches in these waters.

This 4-hour trip takes place in the waters off the peninsula, just a stone's throw from the Teahupo'o wave, with the lush green mountains of Tahiti as the backdrop. Your experienced captain initiates you in traditional Polynesian fishing techniques, accessible to beginners and seasoned fishermen alike. All equipment is provided, along with drinks on board. An authentic experience in one of the wildest settings in Tahiti.

Good to know

Minimum 2 people to depart — or option to book at the 2-person rate solo. Bring a warm layer and sunscreen. Any catch belongs to the participants.

Best for Fishing enthusiasts and those who love the open sea. A unique experience aboard a traditional Polynesian vessel, in one of the most beautiful natural settings in Tahiti.

Practical Information — Tahiti Peninsula

How to get there

The peninsula is about 1h30 by car from central Papeete, following the West then South coast of Tahiti. The road loops around Tahiti Nui before crossing the Taravao isthmus and entering Tahiti Iti. Teahupo'o marina sits at the end of the road on the West side of the peninsula — at PK 17, Taiarapu-Ouest. A rental car is essential.

Best season to visit

The peninsula can be visited year-round. For Teahupo'o wave watching, the biggest sessions happen between April and October during south swells. For whales, the window is strictly July–November. The island tour and boat excursion run all year, with generally calmer sea conditions during the dry season (May–October).

How much time do you need?

One full day is enough to combine wave watching and the half-day boat tour. The island tour by car takes a full day on its own (11–12h). For whales, add a half day. Ideally, give yourself 2 days on the peninsula if you want to do everything without rushing.

Where to stay on the peninsula

We recommend at least 2 nights on the peninsula — enough time to see the waves at different hours, take a boat trip, drive around to Tautira on the other side (there's only one road from Teahupo'o), and stop at the Taravao belvedere for a sweeping panoramic view over both coasts of Tahiti Iti.

Two places stand out. Vanira Lodge is without question the most beautiful property on the peninsula — exceptional setting, total immersion in Polynesian nature. Our personal favourite for surf atmosphere and authenticity: Havaelodge, run by Rairoa. This is where the pro surfers stay — a unique international vibe, steps from the wave. If you love surf or want to really live the peninsula from the inside, this is where to sleep.

Where to eat in Teahupo'o

The dining offer is deliberately simple — and that's a good thing. For lunch: Hinerava snack, authentic local food, very good. In the evening: Yuma roulotte at Yvane's, frequented by locals, relaxed atmosphere. Beyond these two addresses, guesthouses usually offer half-board, and there are a few grocery stores near Taravao for supplies.

Don't miss: the Taravao belvedere

Before heading down to the peninsula or on the way back, stop at the Taravao belvedere — a stunning viewpoint where you can simultaneously see both the East and West coasts of Tahiti Iti, with the mountains in the foreground and the ocean on either side. One of the most beautiful panoramas in all of French Polynesia, and completely free.

Local tip

Avoid rush hour on weekdays from Papeete. Otherwise the road is smooth — and the scenery along Tahiti's South coast is already beautiful. The further you go towards the peninsula, the more the atmosphere shifts: fewer cars, fewer buildings, more locals, more authenticity. It's a gradual escape that begins well before Teahupo'o. Plan at least 2 nights to avoid leaving feeling like you've only scratched the surface.

FAQ — Teahupo'o & Tahiti Peninsula

What should you absolutely do in Teahupo'o?
Wave watching from the lagoon is the unmissable activity — a unique experience even for non-surfers. The half-day boat tour by Teahupoo Tours is our #1 recommendation: it combines the wave, the roadless Fenua Aihere, the mape forest and snorkeling in a single outing.
Can tourists surf Teahupo'o?
Teahupo'o is reserved for confirmed expert surfers — the reef sits just centimetres below the wave, making it one of the most dangerous spots in the world. Beginners and intermediates have no business in the water there. Watching from a boat, however, is accessible to everyone and is a breathtaking experience.
When can you see whales on the Tahiti peninsula?
Humpback whales are present in Polynesian waters from July to November — with a peak in August–September. The Tahiti peninsula is one of the best places to spot them. Book ahead: Polyn'Easy departures fill up fast in high season.
Do you need a rental car to visit the peninsula?
Yes, essential. The peninsula has no tourist public transport. From Papeete, allow 1h30 to reach Teahupo'o marina. Boat excursions and the island tour pick you up at set meeting points, but getting there and back is your responsibility.
Is the peninsula worth visiting if you're only in Tahiti for 2–3 days?
Absolutely — it's actually one of the best day trips from Papeete. A day on the peninsula combining wave watching and the half-day boat tour gives you an authentic, wild vision of Tahiti that the city centre never shows. Plan the full day and leave early.
