Guided Tour of Tahiti —
Must-See Sites &
Day Trips Comparison 2026

Guide by Moorea residents 5 operators compared Updated 2026

Tahiti is often reduced to its capital Papeete — and that's a mistake. The island deserves a proper day of exploration: the west coast with its sacred sites, the east coast waterfalls, the wild peninsula, Teahupo'o, tropical gardens, Pointe Vénus. In a single guided day trip, you cross two worlds.

We compared the 5 best Tahiti day trip operators for you — from the budget half-day to the full-day 4x4 tour and the private option. There's something for every profile and every budget.

Our recommendation

If you have a full day: Titi's Tahiti Tour — full day, max 8 people, exceptional guide, covering both Tahiti Nui AND Iti including Teahupo'o. The most complete tour available. If you only have a half-day: Tahiti Eden Tours (most affordable, highly rated) or Tour Marie Jeanne (passionate local guide with hotel pick-up included).

Titi's Tahiti Tour — the complete island tour ⭐

This is in our view the best tour available for discovering Tahiti in depth. A full day (11–12 hours) with an exceptional guide in a comfortable Hyundai Staria, maximum 8 people. Thierry (known as Titi) takes his guests across both parts of the island — Tahiti Nui AND Tahiti Iti — for a complete immersion in Polynesian culture, nature and history.

What makes this tour unique: breakfast on Vaiava beach with a view of Moorea, a visit to the Arahurahu marae (sacred ancestral site), the Faarumai waterfalls, the Vaipahi water gardens, the Taravao belvedere between sea and mountain, the remote beach of Tautira — and of course, Teahupo'o, the legendary wave of the 2024 Olympic Games.

Must-see sites on a Tahiti island tour

Pointe Vénus — the historic lighthouse

One of Tahiti's most iconic sites. The Pointe Vénus lighthouse, its black-sand beach and the monuments dedicated to Captain James Cook (who anchored here in 1769 to observe the transit of Venus) make for an unmissable historical stop. Beautiful at sunset too.

Faarumai Waterfalls

Three veils of water nestled in a lush valley on the east coast. The main waterfall Vaimahuta (100 metres high) is just a 5-minute walk from the car park. A refreshing stop deep in Polynesian nature.

Vaipahi Water Gardens

An exceptional tropical garden with sacred ponds, cool waterfalls, giant ferns and shaded paths. Known as "Tahiti's little corner of paradise" by local guides — and rightly so.

Maraa Grotto

Cool, mysterious natural cavities surrounded by dense tropical vegetation and crystal-clear water. Paul Gauguin reportedly swam in these waters. A timeless pause.

Arahurahu Marae

A Polynesian sacred site nestled in the Paea valley — one of the best preserved on the island. The stones tell the story of ancestral rituals of the ancient Polynesians. An essential cultural stop.

Teahupo'o — the Olympic wave

The village of Teahupo'o, on the peninsula, is home to one of the most powerful and dangerous waves in the world — made even more legendary by the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Even without surfing, the spectacle from the sea (by boat) is breathtaking. Only available on full-day tours that include the peninsula.

Teahupo'o — the legendary Olympic wave of 2024, only accessible on full-day tours including the Tahiti Iti peninsula

FAQ — Tahiti island tour & day trips

Guided tour or self-drive — how to choose?
It depends on your time and what you want to experience. A guided tour is ideal if you want to cover a lot quickly and understand everything — the guide explains each site, its history and legends. You get through a huge amount in one day. A self-drive rental gives you the freedom to linger where you like, go hiking, spend more time at certain spots. Our advice: if you have several days in Tahiti, do the guided tour at the start of your stay to get the overview, then rent a car for the following days to revisit your favourite spots. Note: a scooter isn't enough — the island is large and the peninsula is far. You need a car.
Is hotel pick-up included?
It depends on the operator and your location. Generally, hotel pick-up is offered for hotels in central Papeete and along the west coast. If you're staying further out or in an unusual area, check directly with the guide when booking by specifying your address — they'll confirm whether it's possible and under what conditions.
What happens if it rains on the day of the tour?
The guide decides based on conditions. Light passing rain won't cancel the tour — and honestly, in the rain the waterfalls are even more beautiful and the vegetation even more lush. In genuinely bad conditions (storm, heavy rain), the operator may cancel and offer a reschedule. Rain in Tahiti is often short-lived — it's rarely a reason to cancel.
Are the tours in French? What if I don't speak French?
Tours are primarily in French. If the group includes English speakers, the guides adapt and can translate. Some operators also offer tours specifically in English — check at the time of booking if that's your main language.
Can we customise the stops or add extra ones?
For shared group tours, no — stops are set in advance and the guide follows the itinerary so everyone gets the same experience. If you want to fully customise your tour, go for the private option (Tahiti Private Services) — the guide adapts the entire itinerary to your interests.
Are the tours suitable for children and elderly travellers?
Yes — walking is light, easy level. Short walks to reach the sites, no demanding hikes. The van is comfortable and air-conditioned — you can rest between stops. Ideal for families and seniors.
Are meals included in the price?
No, meals are generally not included. Time at each stop depends on the site and the guide — some include a lunch break, others don't. Check the details of each tour on the booking platform. Titi's Tahiti Tour includes breakfast on Vaiava beach at the start of the day — a lovely touch.
Can we combine the island tour and whale watching on the same day?
We don't recommend it. Tours already take a good chunk of the day — plus travel time and possible delays. Stacking multiple excursions in one day means you can't fully enjoy either. Book one day for the island tour, one day for whale watching. You'll get so much more out of both.
Is it better to do the tour at the start or end of your stay in Tahiti?
Both work well. At the start of your stay, the tour gives you an overview of the island and helps you decide where to return independently. At the end, it's a great way to round off your trip and do last-minute shopping at the market. Our advice: if you have several days in Tahiti, do the guided tour first — it helps you organise the rest of your time much better.
Go to Teahupo'o on a guided tour or independently?
The guided tour takes you to the wave with set stops — you see the key peninsula sites but move through fairly quickly. If Teahupo'o is a real priority, our recommendation is to stay there overnight — you spend time in the village, soak up the local atmosphere, and can rent a boat to observe the wave up close at your own pace. We're preparing a dedicated Teahupo'o guide for more detail.
