We did our own honeymoon in French Polynesia in October 2023 — 20 days, 5 islands. That trip is directly why MyLittlePolynesia exists. We now live in Moorea and help couples plan their dream trip every week. This guide is the one we wish we had before we left: which islands to choose, what it actually costs, when to go, and the mistakes most couples make. No fluff — just what we know from living here.

Our French Polynesia honeymoon — October 2023, 20 days, 5 islands
We chose October deliberately — for the humpback whales in Moorea. The baby whales are still there in October, and that turned out to be the single best decision of our entire honeymoon. We flew Paris–Papeete via Los Angeles, skipped the overnight in Papeete, and took the ferry to Moorea the very next morning. Recovering from jet lag in a lagoon-front room is infinitely better than in a city hotel.

Moorea — 4 nights · Moorea Island Beach
The whale watching in Moorea was the number one experience of our entire trip — and honestly, of our lives. We were in the water, snorkeling, 15 metres from a humpback whale and her calf. They came towards us, dove, surfaced, dove again — for 15 solid minutes. "Magical" isn't a strong enough word. We also dived several times: stingrays, blacktip reef sharks, turtles and lemon sharks on every dive. Lagoon excursion on day three, snorkeling from the beach at sunrise every morning. We loved Moorea so much we came back to live there the following year.
Bora Bora — 3 nights · Conrad Bora Bora Nui
Overwater bungalow at the Conrad — the lagoon, Mount Otemanu, the colours that don't look real. Three nights was perfect. The standout: a full-day lagoon tour swimming with manta rays. Watching them glide beneath you in that turquoise water, just centimetres away, is something you don't forget. Three nights is exactly enough — Bora Bora is smaller than most people expect, and you don't need more.

Taha'a & Raiatea — 4 nights · Pension Opoa
Pension Opoa in Raiatea was our number two experience of the entire trip in terms of accommodation — independent bungalows, impeccably designed, private pontoon directly on the lagoon. Almost no tourists. Completely underrated. Raiatea's Marae Taputapuātea is exceptional — the largest sacred site in all of Polynesia, UNESCO-listed. Taha'a's shared lagoon with Raiatea is one of the most beautiful in French Polynesia. We visited a vanilla plantation, a rum distillery, a pearl farm — at our own pace, fully autonomous. We had considered Maupiti but stepped back: frequent boat and plane cancellations when there's swell or wind. Good decision.

Rangiroa — 5 nights · Kia Ora Resort
Kia Ora Resort — overwater bungalows above the lagoon of the largest atoll in French Polynesia. We chose Rangiroa over Tikehau or Fakarava because beyond diving, those two atolls don't have much to do. Rangiroa is different — the dolphins in Tiputa Pass are there every day, and the excursions are exceptional. Two full days: Reef Island and the Blue Lagoon. Two of the most beautiful days of the entire trip. Diving with dolphins in the morning, boat excursion in the afternoon, sunset from the Kia Ora pontoon in the evening. Perfect rhythm.
Fakarava — the most preserved atoll in French Polynesia, UNESCO biosphere reserve. A completely different honeymoon experience from the Society Islands.
Tahiti peninsula — 4 nights
We finished on Tahiti — but not in Papeete. We went straight to the wild, unknown peninsula. One night at Pearl Resort to access the Papenoo Valley the next day — a 4x4 through the volcanic caldera, forests, waterfalls, total silence. Then Teahupo'o from a boat, watching pro surfers take 5-metre waves right in front of us. The Polynesia that tourists who stay in Papeete never see.
Best islands for a honeymoon in French Polynesia — honest ranking
After doing our own honeymoon and helping hundreds of couples plan theirs, here is our honest take on each island — what it's really like for a couple, not what the brochures say.
Bora Bora is the quintessential French Polynesia honeymoon destination — and it lives up to the reputation. The lagoon is genuinely that colour. The overwater bungalows are genuinely that good. The manta ray lagoon tour is genuinely that spectacular. If you're planning a honeymoon in French Polynesia, Bora Bora is non-negotiable. Do it. Three nights minimum in an overwater bungalow. The Four Seasons is the absolute best. Conrad is excellent. Don't confuse the InterContinental Bora Bora with the InterContinental Moorea — completely different category.
One thing nobody tells you: the hotel boat transfer costs around €70 per person each way, for 15 minutes on the water. Factor that in.
Moorea surprised us more than any other island. It's much larger than Bora Bora, with a completely different character — volcanic mountains, two deep bays, a breathtaking lagoon, and more to do than almost anywhere else in French Polynesia. If you go between August and November, add the whale watching — it will be the best thing you do on your entire honeymoon. We're not exaggerating. We loved it so much we moved there.
You can do Moorea without overwater bungalows and have a magnificent honeymoon: Moorea Sunset Beach, Moorea Beach Lodge — excellent options at a fraction of Bora Bora prices.
Taha'a is the island most couples don't know to add — and the one they're most grateful for when they do. Almost no tourists. The lagoon it shares with Raiatea is one of the most beautiful in Polynesia. The Pearl Resort Taha'a is magnificent and a must. Vanilla plantations, pearl farms, rum distillery — all within reach by boat. Combine 4–5 nights between Taha'a and Raiatea alongside 3 nights in Bora Bora and you have a near-perfect honeymoon itinerary.

Most people think Rangiroa is only for divers. It's not. The dolphins in Tiputa Pass are there every day — you don't need a tank to see them. The Blue Lagoon and Reef Island excursions are two of the most beautiful days you can have in French Polynesia. Kia Ora Resort is excellent. For couples who want something different from the Society Islands — a flat atoll, total tranquility, extraordinary snorkeling — Rangiroa is an excellent choice.
Maupiti is beautiful — genuinely one of the most stunning islands in Polynesia. But it's not for every couple on a honeymoon. Only family pensions, no hotels. Very small. And frequent cancellations of boats and planes when there's swell or wind — which can derail your entire itinerary. If you want hotel accommodation and a guaranteed schedule, skip it. If you want authentic Polynesian immersion and are flexible, it's extraordinary. We chose not to go on our honeymoon and don't regret it.
Overwater bungalows — what it's really like and whether it's worth it
French Polynesia invented the overwater bungalow. There is nowhere else in the world where it feels quite like this. Is it worth the price? Yes — but with conditions.
The "wow" moment isn't just the view. It's the combination: you're on the water, your room has a glass floor panel so you can watch fish and sometimes sharks pass beneath you at night, you can step off your private deck and swim at any hour, and you wake up to a lagoon that looks like it's been filtered in Lightroom — except it hasn't. The Conrad Bora Bora has the largest terraces over the water. The Four Seasons is the most refined experience. The Kia Ora in Rangiroa gives you the same overwater feeling at significantly lower prices.
Two nights is not enough. Check-in is at 3pm, check-out is at 11am — on a two-night stay you barely have time to absorb where you are. Three nights gives you one day to settle in and feel it, one day for excursions, one day of pure enjoyment. Don't cut corners on this.

Every major resort in French Polynesia prepares honeymoon touches when you tell them — flower decorations, a bottle of wine, a thermos, a beach bag. It's free, it just requires you to say it. Mention it in the comments when you book, and again at check-in.

French Polynesia is expensive. Anyone who tells you otherwise hasn't been. But the range is enormous depending on your choices — and knowing where to spend and where to save makes the difference between a good trip and an extraordinary one.

If you go in July or August, add 30 to 50% to everything. May–June and September–November are 30% cheaper than peak season with equally beautiful weather. October was our choice — and we'd make the same decision again.
This surprised us too. Local French Polynesia agencies negotiate directly with hotels and inter-island airlines — and they consistently get better rates than anything available online, including Booking.com. On our own honeymoon we booked independently. If we did it again, we'd use an agency. Same cost, far less stress, and better rooms.
Best time for a honeymoon in French Polynesia — and why July–August isn't it

July is perfect weather and the Heiva festival is extraordinary — but the whales have just arrived and are still very shy. Early August is the same. From late August through November, the whale calves are there and the encounters are exceptional. September, October and November are our genuine top recommendation for a honeymoon — great weather, whale season, and 30% cheaper than July–August.
October gave us: baby whales in Moorea, perfect weather on every island, 30% lower prices than July, and almost no crowds at Raiatea and Taha'a. The whale watching alone was worth the entire trip. If you can go in September, October or November — go.
Honeymoon mistakes to avoid — from experience
Thinking a travel agency costs more — it doesn't
This was our mistake. We booked independently assuming it would be cheaper. It wasn't. Local French Polynesia agencies negotiate directly with hotels and airlines — they access rates that aren't available online, especially on inter-island flights which are actually cheaper booked from France or abroad than locally. We'd use an agency if we did it again. Same price, much less stress, better rooms.
Booking last-minute
Prices explode. The best overwater bungalows in Bora Bora are sold out 9–12 months ahead in peak season. Book your flights and key accommodation as soon as you have dates. Especially Maupiti if you're considering it — only 10 pensions on the entire island.
Not choosing excursions carefully
There are good operators and average operators on every island. The experience can be completely different. This is where local knowledge makes an enormous difference — knowing which lagoon tour captain actually stops long enough for you to swim with the mantas, which 4x4 guide knows the valley properly.
Routing back through Papeete unnecessarily
A common mistake: booking an itinerary that forces you back to Tahiti in the middle of your trip for a connection. This wastes a full day and significant money. The right itinerary makes loops — Moorea, then the Leeward Islands (Bora Bora, Taha'a, Raiatea) without backtracking, then possibly a Tuamotu atoll before returning to Papeete at the end.
Not choosing your pension carefully
Family pensions in French Polynesia vary enormously in atmosphere. Some are very social — hosts always around, communal meals, other guests. Others are completely private. If you want intimacy as a couple, ask specifically before booking. The setting and the hosts make an enormous difference to your experience.
Trusting star ratings over renovation dates
A brand-new 4-star property will give you a better experience than a 5-star that hasn't been renovated in 10 years. Ask about renovation status. Local experts know which properties are currently in top condition — this is exactly the kind of detail that makes or breaks a honeymoon.
