Swim with Humpback Whales
in Moorea —
Season, Price & Best Tours
Swimming alongside a 15-meter humpback whale and her calf in the Moorea lagoon — watching them rise and descend in slow, graceful cycles, turning to look at you — is the #1 experience in all of French Polynesia. Every year between July and November, these giants migrate from Antarctica to the warm waters of the Society Islands to mate, give birth and nurse their young. This guide covers the exact season month by month, prices, accredited operators and everything you need to know for an ethical encounter.

Swimming with humpback whales in Moorea — the experience
Moorea is one of the very few places on Earth where swimming with humpback whales is possible under regulated, accessible conditions. Each year, these 12 to 15-meter giants leave the cold Antarctic waters and seek refuge in the lagoons of the Society Islands — to mate, give birth and raise their calves.
What makes Moorea unique is the proximity. Whales regularly enter the bays — Opunohu, Cook's Bay — just a few hundred meters from shore. With an accredited operator, you are placed in the water at a regulated distance, and whales often approach out of curiosity. Watching a mother and calf make repeated up-and-down passes through the water at 15 meters away, looking directly at you — it's an experience like nothing else.
We lived this experience in October 2023 during our honeymoon. At 15 meters from a whale and her calf, in snorkeling gear, for over 15 minutes. It is our #1 memory from the entire trip — and the main reason we recommend Moorea in September–October for any honeymoon or special trip.

Whale season in Moorea — month by month
The official whale watching season in Moorea runs from July 20 to November 20. Humpback whales migrate progressively from Antarctica to the warm Polynesian waters. In late July, the chances of seeing whales are lower — they are still arriving. Peak season runs from August through October.
Early arrivals
First whales arriving — low chances, tours possible but not guaranteed. Late July: frequently miss.
Courtship displays
Males very active — powerful songs, spectacular breaches and tail slaps. Ideal for witnessing whale behavior.
Calves everywhere
Our top recommendation — mothers and calves, often very close and deeply moving encounters.
Last sightings
Whales still present early November. Official season closes November 20.
Between August and early November, the chances of seeing whales exceed 99% — encounters are almost guaranteed. In late July, it's more common to miss them as the whales are still arriving progressively. No operator can guarantee an encounter with nature, but in peak season it's as close to certain as it gets.

Whale tour prices in Moorea — 2026
| Tour type | Price / person | Group | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared tour (standard) | €100–150 | 6 in water max | 3–4h |
| Small group (6 max) | €100–210 | 6 max (regulated) | 3–4h |
| Private tour (couple/family) | €500+ total | 2–4 people | 3–4h |
| Combo whales + lagoon | €130–160 | 8–12 people | 5–6h |
We recommend tours with a maximum of 8 people — check this number in the operator's listing before booking, it's specified in the activity description. The difference between a 6-person tour and a 12-person tour is real: the guide can take their time, stay with the same whale, and adapt the experience to your pace.
Whale season in Bora Bora vs Moorea — which to choose?
Both Moorea and Bora Bora offer excellent whale watching experiences during the same season (July–November) — the choice simply comes down to your itinerary. The whale season is identical on both islands and the quality of encounters is comparable. Choose based on where you are staying.

Plan your whale swim based on your itinerary — not on which island is "better." Both offer extraordinary encounters. If you're spending time on both islands during whale season, Moorea tends to have more specialized operators with smaller groups.

Accredited operators for whale swimming in Moorea
In French Polynesia, only officially accredited operators are legally authorized to approach whales. This ensures compliance with strict regulations — minimum safety distances, 6 swimmers maximum in the water, no disturbance of mothers and calves. Never book through an unofficial provider found on social media.
What makes a good operator?
By law since 2026, all tours are limited to 6 swimmers in the water at once. Look for operators who offer morning departures for calmer conditions, have experienced guides who know whale behavior, provide naturalist education, and have clear cancellation policies for bad weather. All 7 operators in the comparison table are accredited and bookable through Viator with verified reviews and free cancellation.
Practical tips for the best whale swimming experience
It's a physical excursion — you need to swim
This is not a passive boat trip. The boat drops you 100+ meters from the whale — and you need to swim with the guide to approach it at a controlled pace. It can be physically demanding, especially if the sea is a bit choppy. You don't need to be an expert swimmer, but you need to be comfortable in the water and able to swim several hundred meters with fins and mask.
Prevent seasickness
Whale tours are conducted in open water — conditions can be rough. If you're prone to seasickness, take medication (such as Mercalm or equivalent) the night before and the morning of the tour. Don't risk spoiling the experience.
Book in advance
In peak season (September–October), spots fill up weeks in advance — especially small-group and semi-private formats. Book as soon as your dates are confirmed. Check the cancellation policy: tours are often cancelled in bad weather conditions, which is common. Make sure you have flexibility in your schedule.
Rules in the water
Never approach closer than 15 meters to a whale. Never touch the animals. Don't block their path. Don't dive towards them. Your guide will give instructions before entering the water — listen carefully. This is for your safety as much as for the whales' wellbeing.
Morning departures are best
Morning tours (departing 7–8am) generally offer the best conditions — calmer sea, ideal light for seeing the whales underwater. Afternoon tours are possible but conditions can be choppier.
