Tahiti is the largest and most populated island in French Polynesia. It's the hub of all Polynesia — every international flight arrives and departs from here. But it's also a genuine destination in its own right: the wild peninsula, Teahupo'o, the Papenoo valley, the lava tubes, Papeete market, humpback whales... There's easily enough here for 3 days minimum, and you'll leave with unforgettable memories.

Tahiti — real destination or just a stopover?
Tahiti is underrated. Most travelers arrive in Papeete, spend a night near the airport, and fly off to Moorea or Bora Bora the next morning. That's a shame.
In our view, Tahiti deserves more time — especially at the end of your trip. If you arrive late on an international flight, sleep in Papeete, visit the market in the morning, then head to the islands. But on your way back, give yourself 3 days: rent a car, drive around the island, head down to the peninsula, discover Teahupo'o, come back up through the Papenoo valley. That's where the real Tahiti reveals itself — wild, volcanic, profound.
Tahiti is also the hub of all Polynesia — where everything begins and ends. A well-planned loop itinerary from Tahiti avoids unnecessary backtracking. That's why careful advance planning makes such a difference.

Papeete market, city centre & the soul of Tahiti
Papeete market is the beating heart of the city. You'll find everything: tropical fruits, fresh vegetables, colourful pareos, monoi oil, local crafts and the famous black pearls. There's a small affordable shop tucked away on the first floor — not to be missed. It's also the best place in all of Polynesia to buy black pearls — multiple pearl boutiques inside and around the market, with a wide range of qualities and prices. If you're bringing pearls home, come here, not the airport.

The city centre is worth a stroll: Notre-Dame cathedral, the waterfront to watch ferries and yachts pass, and in the evening, the roulottes on Place Vaiete — local food trucks serving raw fish in coconut milk, grilled meats and crepes in a genuinely Polynesian atmosphere. One of the best food experiences on the island, at very accessible prices.
The marina is also a great evening spot — several bars with boat views, ideal to round off a day beautifully.

Swim with humpback whales in Tahiti
From late July to November, humpback whales migrate from Antarctica to reproduce in the waters of French Polynesia. In Tahiti, tours depart mainly from the west coast, close to Papeete — very accessible from the city centre. Excursions also leave from the peninsula (Taravao), in a more preserved and crowd-free setting.

This is the activity that surprised us most in Tahiti — and one we recommend most strongly to adventurous travelers. The Hitiaa lava tubes are volcanic tunnels formed during the island's creation. You descend in a wetsuit, walk through the water, and explore spectacular underground galleries. It's a blend of canyoning, aquatic hiking and spelunking — in a setting found nowhere else on earth.

Walk in, wander, soak it up — it's free, and it's one of the best immersions in Polynesian culture. Friendly vendors, extraordinary local produce (exotic fruits, monoi oil, black pearls). For food, the evening roulottes on Place Vaiete are unbeatable value.
Renting a car and doing the full loop of Tahiti Nui and Tahiti Iti costs just the price of fuel. The road is in perfect condition, the scenery changes at every bend — west coast lagoon, east coast cliffs, wild peninsula. One of the most beautiful island drives in Polynesia. Pearl Beach Tahiti (stunning black sand) is freely accessible.

What to do in Tahiti when it rains
Rain in Tahiti is often brief and can actually intensify the beauty of the volcanic landscapes. A few activities that are weather-independent:
Lava tubes — the aquatic hike through the lava tunnels is completely unaffected by rain, and frankly, the rain makes the atmosphere even more mystical at the cave entrance.
Museum of Tahiti and the Islands — Te Fare Iamanaha — in Punaauia, recently renovated. Tattoo art, everyday objects, ancestral skills, Pacific peoples' origins. A must-see cultural stop. Papeete Market & roulottes — in the rain, the covered market is perfect. And in the evening, the roulottes under their awnings remain the liveliest spot in Papeete, rain or shine.
Polynesian massage & spa — the major hotels (InterContinental, Hilton, Sofitel) offer spas open to non-guests by reservation. Traditional Polynesian massage, monoi treatment, hammam. Ideal for a luxury break in bad weather.
Skydiving over Tahiti — an exceptional view even under cloud cover.
Scuba diving — rain has zero impact underwater. It's actually a great opportunity to do a discover dive.
Gastronomic restaurants — take the chance to have lunch at one of the big hotel restaurants (InterContinental, Hilton, Pearl Beach) whose tables are excellent, or at Vini Vini for a fresh and affordable meal in the city centre.
Things to do in Tahiti in 3 days
If you arrive in the evening on an international flight: night in Papeete or Faa'a (near the airport). Next morning: Papeete market from opening time, stroll through the city centre, Notre-Dame cathedral, the waterfront. Lunch at the roulottes or at Vini Vini (fresh, affordable sushi bar near the market). Afternoon: pick up your rental car.
Early start, drive to the peninsula. Cross Tahiti Nui, head down to Taravao, continue to Teahupo'o. Plan a boat excursion around the peninsula (snorkeling, hidden cave, wave watching). Return via the east coast — Tautira beach, wild atmosphere. Dinner on the west coast.
Morning: guided 4x4 safari in the Papenoo Valley or aquatic hike in the Hitiaa lava tubes. Afternoon: back to Papeete, last market shopping, sunset at the marina or on the Kon Tiki Hotel rooftop. Departure or ferry to Moorea.

For a drink
The marina promenade has been completely redesigned — cycling path, running spots, bars and restaurants with boat views. Several great spots for an aperitif by the sea, in a relaxed local atmosphere. The most pleasant place in Papeete to start or end an evening.
Top floor of the Kon Tiki Hotel in central Papeete. A rooftop terrace with stunning views over Papeete and the mountains. Quality cocktails, chill atmosphere. There's also a nice restaurant below for dinner. One of the best views in the city.
Pearl Beach Tahiti's black sand beach is magnificent at sunset. The InterContinental Tahiti is in our view the island's most upscale hotel with its overwater bungalows — and its restaurants are excellent. Even if you're not staying there, a drink on their terrace is an experience.
For food
Place Vaiete, every evening. Raw fish in coconut milk, grilled meats, crepes, Asian food — all for a few thousand XPF. The local food truck scene at its best: cheap, filling, convivial atmosphere. Perfect for a quick and authentic break between sightseeing.
A small sushi-style restaurant in central Papeete, not far from the market. Everything is fresh, made to order, and reasonably priced for the quality. There are several branches, but the city centre one is the best. Our budget favourite in Papeete.
PK18 (18th kilometre of Papeete's west coastal road) is a great local spot — a seafront promenade with several roulottes and an ice cream parlour. The perfect place to mix with Tahitians, eat local and take a break facing the lagoon. More authentic than the city centre, less touristy, especially lively at weekends.
A genuine favourite — the Hilton Tahiti brunch is one of the best on the island. Beautiful setting, quality produce, relaxed atmosphere. Worth planning if you have a full day in Tahiti and want to treat yourself.
