Huahine is French Polynesia as it was thirty years ago. No big resorts, no crowds, no mass tourism — just strikingly beautiful bays, mountains shaped like a woman (that's what the island's name means), dense vegetation and locals who have lived at their own pace since time immemorial. This is the island for those who seek pure authenticity, genuine encounters, and the rare pleasure of slowing down with the people who live here.
One thing most people forget: Huahine is very close to Tahiti. By plane, it's 40 minutes. By boat, the Apetahi Express connects Papeete to Huahine — the cheapest option (~€50 one way), with inter-island passes available. It's also the least expensive of the Leeward Islands to reach. No excuse not to include it in your itinerary.
To be honest: Huahine is not an activities island. You don't come here for an endless list of things to do. Three nights is enough to see the essentials — two excursion days and one full rest day. If you want to stay longer, it will be for the slowness, the stillness, and the time spent with locals. And that has no price.

Huahine is also known as the island of women — it has always been governed by queens. Its original name was Huʻahuʻatearu, then Tematatoʻerau, then Mataʻireʻa, before becoming Huahine. The mountain silhouette that draws the outline of a pregnant woman lying down is no coincidence — it's the mark of a deeply feminine, mystical island, inhabited by a particular energy that travellers sense from the moment they arrive.
People often say Huahine is travelling thirty years back in time. It's the best description we've heard. No five-star resorts, no overwater bungalows at €3,000 a night, no tourist crowds at the dock — just magnificent bays, mountains whose silhouette draws the shape of a lying woman, and local life flowing at its own rhythm.
What's remarkable about Huahine is that it's divided into two parts — and simply driving around this island, with its mountains, lagoons and mystical atmosphere, is truly incredible. You can see the sea from almost everywhere. Very few fences, few buildings — farms, vanilla fields, agricultural plots lining the road. It's easy to imagine that in ten years this island will change completely. Today, it is still preserved in a rare way.
What we loved most: the encounters. The people of Huahine open up to you as if you were friends coming to visit. Tourism hasn't yet reached saturation point here, and it changes everything — they want to share their island, to tell its story. It's a quality of authentic attention you no longer find in Bora Bora or Moorea.
Two essential days: a lagoon excursion day — coral gardens, pearl farms on the water, deserted motus — and an island tour day with a local guide. The latter reveals the island's history, its marae, its traditional fish traps, its agriculture. These two days are what make a stay in Huahine worthwhile.
We stayed at Coco Bay Villas, run by Abi and Rautahi — a very high-end Airbnb, beautifully located, with exceptional hosts. An address we wholeheartedly recommend.
Huahine Nui (north) is the main part of the island — more accessible, the village of Fare, most accommodation, the Faie eels, Lake Fauna Nui and Maeva village are here. Huahine Iti (south) is far more immersive and wild — fewer people, wilder beaches (Hana Iti, Avea Bay), the Marae Anini, and an atmosphere that feels genuinely off the beaten path. Both are connected by a bridge and can be explored in a single day by car or scooter.

A full day on the Huahine lagoon: snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, motu visits, observation of stingrays and blacktip reef sharks in their natural environment, lunch on a motu. We did this excursion with local operators — passionate guides, comfortable boat, an authentic experience far from industrialised tourist circuits.
Huahine's lagoon is one of the most pristine in the Society Islands. Very few people on the water, abundant marine life, and an atmosphere that has nothing in common with the overcrowded excursions of Bora Bora. This is one of the main reasons why Huahine genuinely deserves a detour for nature lovers.

The island tour is one of the main things to do in Huahine — fun and cultural, it suits all types of travel: family, friends or couples. Huahine is, along with Moorea, the island for hiking par excellence. Nothing is more beautiful than discovering its hidden gems on foot, by bicycle or by 4x4. A local guide is strongly recommended to not miss any of the island's secret corners — local guides tell the island's story as if you were friends, with rare generosity.
The unmissable stops on the tour:
Lake Fa'una Nui — a natural curiosity rare in Eastern Polynesia: a brackish lake that once belonged to the royal family. Known for its ava (white salmon) and other prized fish, once reserved for the ruling families.
The village of Maeva & Marae Manunu — in this exceptional village, more than 200 stone structures and marae await you. You'll walk among the ruins of Marae Manunu, one of the most impressive on the island. A small museum housed in the fare pote'e is as humble as it is fascinating for understanding Polynesian history.
The ancestral fish traps — south of the lake, in parts of the lagoon. Their construction testifies to the adaptation of people to their environment and the ancestral techniques used to catch fresh food. A unique know-how, still visible today.
Marae Anini — one of the largest marae on Huahine Iti, located on the edge of the lagoon in the south of the island. Remarkably preserved, it bears witness to the history and ancestral traditions of Polynesian civilisation.

Huahine Vanilla & Local Crafts — Pearl & Paréo

Huahine is one of the rare islands in French Polynesia where Tahitensis vanilla is still cultivated by hand. You'll discover the hand-pollination process, the drying and fermentation — a rare sensory and cultural experience. A free visit is possible, but a guided excursion transforms the visit into a true immersion in Polynesian agricultural heritage.
The unmissable address: Vanilleraie Vairupe — an authentic artisanal farm in the north of the island. To combine with the Maison du Paréo, a local workshop where you discover the making of the traditional Polynesian paréo. Two cultural stops easily done in the same half-day.
The north of the island is also home to pearl farms on the water — floating structures in the middle of the lagoon, showcasing the production process of Tahiti's black pearl.

Huahine is a hilly island — the roads are not flat. A 50cc scooter is a bit underpowered, especially for two people. We recommend renting a car or a higher-displacement scooter to explore the island comfortably as a couple.

Huahine gets its name from the shape of its mountains which, seen from the sky, draw the silhouette of a lying woman. This unique relief, combined with the two lagoons (Huahine Nui and Huahine Iti) and the surrounding motus, offers an exceptional aerial panorama. We haven't done the flight ourselves, but it's one of the activities we recommend without hesitation in Huahine — precisely because the terrain is more spectacular than elsewhere and the island is calm enough to truly enjoy it.
The flight is in a two-seat ULM with a certified pilot — various formulas available depending on the duration and circuit you want. Book in advance as availability is limited on this small island.
Book directly with local operators — ask your accommodation for up-to-date contacts. Allow 30 to 60 minutes depending on the formula. Ideally early morning for the best light and visibility.

Beaches & Snorkeling in Huahine
The best beaches in Huahine
Huahine is divided into two parts: Huahine Nui to the north, more accessible and more inhabited, and Huahine Iti to the south, far more immersive and wild. Both are connected by a bridge. Each has its beaches — here are the ones we recommend.
Huahine Nui — Fare beach
A few hundred metres from Fare harbour, the public beach is a magnificent white sand beach accessible via the coastal road. The lagoon waters offer an excellent snorkeling spot — bring your mask and snorkel. The view over the neighbouring islands of Raiatea and Taha'a is superb, and from the beach you can clearly see the silhouette of the pregnant woman lying down formed by the mountain ridges.
Huahine Nui — the former Sofitel hotel
The Sofitel hotel closed in the early 2000s. The abandoned infrastructure gives the place an extraordinary character — urban explorers will love it. The beach is freely accessible and offers the best snorkeling spot in Huahine: a wonderful coral garden facing the beach, with the reef barrier less than ten metres from the shore. Combine with a visit to the nearby Marae Manunu.
Huahine Iti — Avea Bay
The southern coastline of Huahine Iti offers nature that is almost entirely preserved. Avea Bay beach, with its fine white sand, relatively sheltered from the wind, is ideal for swimming and pure relaxation. A local snack along the road allows you to have lunch on site.
Huahine Iti — Hana Iti, the end-of-the-world beach
Difficult to access — by sea or via a small path through the forest — Hana Iti beach looks like a lost paradise. A superb white sand beach on the site of a former hotel destroyed by a cyclone in the 1990s. The place is surprisingly well-maintained despite the isolation. You genuinely feel like you have a beach all to yourself.
Rent a scooter or car for the day — it's the only way to discover both parts of the island at your own pace and find these beaches. Huahine Iti to the south is the most immersive part — allow a full day to explore it serenely. Ask your accommodation for their secret spots.

The Sacred Blue-Eyed Eels of Fā'ie — Huahine
The sacred eels of Fā'ie — the puhi tari'a
The puhi tari'a of Huahine are a must-see. These famous sacred eels live in a stream spreading between the roots of māpē trees (local chestnuts) near the village of Fā'ie. They can reach two metres in length and their blue eyes are hypnotic. For the island's inhabitants, their divine presence is reassuring and a sign of prosperity.
Access is entirely free. A bridge spans the stream — the eels are there, in the dark water, visible up close. You can observe them and sometimes feed them with food bought on site. A strange and fascinating moment, halfway between marine biology and Polynesian sacred tradition.
Free access, no entry fee. Village of Faie, Huahine Nui — north of the island. By car from Fare: about 15 minutes. The eels are present at all times, day or night. Perfect to combine with an island tour by car or scooter.

Here's how we'd organise 3 nights in Huahine to see the essentials without rushing:
Rent a scooter or car and explore Huahine at your own pace — Huahine Nui to the north, Huahine Iti to the south, beaches, hiking, discovering the village of Fare. Evening: sunset over the lagoon.
Full day on the lagoon: coral gardens, pearl farms, deserted motus, snorkeling. The highlight of the stay.
With a local guide: viewpoints, Maeva marae, Faie eels, vanilla, Polynesian culture. Total immersion in the island.

Huahine or Raiatea — which one to choose?
The real question isn't "which one is better" — it's how each island fits into your overall itinerary. Both offer a similar type of experience: authentic, mountain, lagoon, Polynesian culture, pearls, vanilla. Doing both in the same trip often means doing the same thing twice.
Our advice: think first about your travel style and the logic of your overall circuit. Looking for pure authenticity and contact with locals? Huahine. Have more time and want to go deeper into the Leeward Islands with Raiatea/Taha'a? Raiatea. But in both cases, we recommend changing archipelago afterwards — heading to the Tuamotu (Rangiroa, Fakarava) for a completely different experience: atoll, diving, infinite turquoise lagoon. That's where a truly balanced French Polynesia itinerary lies.
In short: don't do both Huahine AND Raiatea on the same short trip. Choose one, then change archipelago.

The best time to visit Huahine is April to November — dry season, blue skies, calm seas. The same window as for the other Society Islands. Avoid December to March: rainy season, humid heat, frequent showers. Not ideal for excursions and beaches.
May–June and September–October are the sweet spots: great weather, fewer crowds than July–August, and more reasonable accommodation prices.

Several local operators offer excursions on the Huahine lagoon. We personally went out with Matairea Lagoon Tour — a serious family business offering lagoon and 4x4 safari. Huahine Nautique is another well-established local operator. Book in advance as places are limited.
Diving in Huahine
Huahine has two dive clubs to explore its lagoon and passes: Pacific Blue Adventure and Mahana Dive. Spots suitable for all levels, in a preserved and uncrowded lagoon — a very different experience from the overcrowded sites of Bora Bora. Book directly with the clubs on site.

Getting there from Tahiti
Air Tahiti and Air Moana serve Huahine from Papeete — approximately 40 minutes by plane. Count $130–165 round trip depending on availability and season. It's the least expensive of the Leeward Islands to reach from Tahiti.
Boat alternative: the Apetahi Express connects Papeete to Huahine — not the fastest option (around 3 to 4 hours crossing), but the cheapest: around $55 one way, with inter-island passes available. A good option for those who want to enjoy the sea crossing. Huahine fits naturally into a Leeward Islands loop: Papeete → Huahine → Raiatea → Bora Bora → Papeete.

- Huahine Royal — overwater bungalows, well located, the best-known address for pilotis in Huahine
- Maitai Lapita Village Huahine — upscale, pleasant bungalows, beautiful property
- Moana Lodge — beach bungalows, intimate and authentic atmosphere
- Mahana Lodge — beach bungalow option, peaceful and preserved setting
Beyond these addresses, the island has authentic family pensions (pensions de famille) — accommodation here is pure Polynesian hospitality, not international luxury.
Where to eat in Huahine
The dining offer is limited but authentic — one of Huahine's characteristics. We recommend half-board with your accommodation for dinners. For meals out:
- Yacht Club — pleasant happy hour, lagoon view, lively bar. The essential spot for a drink at end of day.
- Izzy's — carefully prepared cuisine, convivial setting, good local address.
- Métis — refined table, beautiful atmosphere, the best culinary experience on the island.
And in the evening: the Huahine Yacht Club is the only lively spot on the island, right in the centre of the village and port. A typical small bar, not trendy at all, where locals and travellers naturally mix. Incredible sunsets over the lagoon, and sometimes dolphins jumping right in front. The perfect end to a day of excursions.
Getting around
A car or scooter rental is essential to explore the island at your own pace. The main road does a loop around both islands (Huahine Nui and Huahine Iti are connected by a bridge) — allow 2 to 3 hours for the full circuit.
