7 accredited whale watching operators in Tahiti — 2026 comparison

All whale watching tours in Tahiti are regulated in the same way — same format (around 4 hours), same legal framework, same respectful approach rules. All operators are equivalent in terms of guiding quality.

The real difference: the number of people on the boat. A water entry is limited to 6 people maximum by regulation. If there are 12 on the boat, you wait on board while 6 others swim, then alternate. It's a trade-off between price and exclusivity: 6 max = more expensive, more intimate, more time in the water. 12 max = cheaper, but less time in the water.

Notre conseil saison Avoid July — whales are only just starting to arrive. From 15 August it's already very good. September and October are the ideal months to be virtually certain of seeing them. Mid-November they're still around and the season ends well.
⚠️ Book as early as possible This is the number 1 activity in French Polynesia — in Tahiti and Moorea alike. Small-group tours fill up weeks in advance, especially during peak season (September–October). Don't leave it to the last minute.

Our recommendation: All operators are accredited and equivalent in quality. Choose first based on your location on the island, then by budget. To maximise your time in the water: go for a 6-person max boat (Wild Explorer, Tahiti Ocean Adventures or Mobydick Diving). On a tighter budget: Tahiti Ocean Explorer ($122) or Tahiti Iti Diving ($153). And remember: September–October = best months to be sure of seeing them. Book well in advance — this is the most popular activity in all of French Polynesia.

Whale watching in Tahiti vs Moorea — what's the difference?

Both islands offer the same experience. Humpback whales in French Polynesia — whether off Tahiti or Moorea — follow the same migration cycle, show the same behaviours and offer the same quality of encounter. The best answer: choose based on your itinerary. If you're in Tahiti at the start or end of your trip, go from Tahiti. If you're staying in Moorea, go from Moorea. There's no need to change islands just for the whales.

In Tahiti, tours depart mainly from the west coast (Puna'auia, Paea, Mataiea) — the most productive zone — and also from the Taiarapu Peninsula (Taravao and Teva I Uta), a quieter and less-frequented area.

Whale season in Tahiti — month by month

The whale season in French Polynesia runs from late July to mid-November. Humpback whales migrate from the cold waters of Antarctica to the warm waters of French Polynesia every year — they come to mate, give birth and raise their calves. In Tahiti, whale watching tours begin in earnest from late August for the best chances of encounter.

July – 15 August

⚠️ Too early

First whales arriving — lower chances, tours run but encounters not guaranteed. Common to miss them.

15 Aug – September

✅ Mid season

Whales well present. Active males, powerful songs. Good period to get started.

September – October · whale season Tahiti ⭐

Peak season

The absolute peak — mothers have given birth, calves are playing and leaping, sometimes coming very close to the boat. Encounters virtually guaranteed.

November

🔁 End of season

Whales still present but gradually heading back. Official season closes 20 November — catch them while you can.

Book as early as possible — this is the #1 activity in Polynesia

This is the most sought-after excursion in all of French Polynesia — in Tahiti and Moorea alike. Small-group tours fill up weeks in advance, especially during peak season (September–October). Book as soon as your dates are confirmed, ideally several months ahead.

Practical tips for whale watching in Tahiti

Swimming with whales in Tahiti — what to expect

The boat drops you approximately 100 metres from the whale and you swim towards her with the guide. It's physically demanding, especially if there's a swell. You need to be comfortable in the water and able to swim several hundred metres in fins, mask and snorkel in open sea.

Choose your operator based on where you're staying

For your whale tour in Tahiti, location is key. Operators generally don't come to pick you up — you need to get to the departure point. Choose the operator closest to your accommodation. West coast / Papeete: Tahiti Ocean Explorer, Wild Explorer, Tahiti Ocean Adventures. Peninsula: Tahiti Iti Diving, Polyn'Easy. East coast / Taravao: Mokarran Diving, Mobydick Diving.

6 people maximum in the water

Whatever the group size on the boat, French Polynesian regulations limit water entries to 6 people maximum. If your boat takes 12, you'll wait on board while 6 others swim, then alternate. To maximise your time in the water, choose an operator with a 6-person max boat.

Seasickness prevention

Tours go out into open ocean — take anti-nausea medication (e.g. Dramamine, Mercalm) the evening before and the morning of your tour if you're prone to seasickness.

Equipment provided

Mask, snorkel and fins are provided by all operators. Bring reef-safe sunscreen (mandatory in French Polynesian waters), a towel, and a warm layer for the boat ride back.

FAQ — Whale watching in Tahiti & French Polynesia

What is the best time for whale watching in Tahiti?
September and October are the ideal months for any whale tour in Tahiti — whales are very numerous and encounters are virtually guaranteed. From 15 August it's already great. Avoid July and early August — whales are only just arriving and chances are lower. The official season closes mid-November, when they gradually head back south.
Is it better to go whale watching from Tahiti or Moorea?
Swimming with whales in Tahiti or Moorea offers the same quality of encounter — choose based on your itinerary. Whales come much closer to shore in both Tahiti and Moorea than in Bora Bora. If you're in Tahiti at the start or end of your trip, go from Tahiti. If you're in Moorea, go from Moorea.
How much does a whale watching tour in Tahiti cost?
From $148 (Polyn'Easy, peninsula, photos included) to $229 (Wild Explorer, 6-person max, very small group). The cheapest option is Tahiti Ocean Explorer at $122, but with 12 people and rotations of 6 in the water. Prices may change with the season — they are given as an indication at time of publication.
Is swimming in the water with the whales guaranteed?
No — no operator can guarantee a water entry. It depends on the whales' behaviour, sea conditions and their mood on the day. Sighting from the boat is virtually certain in peak season. Water entry is possible in the majority of tours during September–October.
Can tours be cancelled?
Yes — in case of heavy swell or strong winds. Build in a spare day where possible, especially if this is your priority activity. Check each operator's cancellation policy before booking.
