What to Do in Fakarava: Exploring the North and South of the Atoll
When planning a trip to Fakarava, it’s important to think of the atoll as two islands in one. In the north, around Garuae Pass, you’ll find most guesthouses, snack bars, water activities, and excursions like quad biking and jet skiing. This is the more vibrant side of the island—perfect for a first-time visit—with amazing scuba diving and snorkeling spots, pearl farms to tour, and idyllic motus to escape to for the day.
At the opposite end, in the far south, Tumakohua Pass offers a completely different experience: wild, remote, and peaceful. The tiny village of Tetamanu feels frozen in time, with its famous coral church, legendary shark dives, and surreal turquoise lagoons. From here, you can also visit the Pink Sands—a breathtaking, pastel-colored spot best seen on a sunny day.
To travel between north and south, you’ll need to arrange a boat transfer through your accommodation or local operator—expect a ride of about 1.5 to 2 hours. On land, especially in the north, it’s easy to rent a bike or quad to explore at your own pace.
So which part should you visit north or south? We recommend both! Each has its own charm and unforgettable treasures waiting to be discovered.

Top 7 Things to Do in Fakarava: Must-See Activities and Experiences
Before planning your stay in Fakarava, it’s important to know the best time to visit French Polynesia. The islands enjoy a tropical climate year-round, with temperatures between 25°C and 30°C.
👉Check our full article Best time to visit French Polynesia. Let’s start our top 7 !
1. Scuba Diving in Fakarava – North and South Passes
Fakarava is a diver’s paradise, whether you’re a beginner or an experienced scuba enthusiast. The island is home to two legendary passes offering some of the most thrilling underwater experiences in French Polynesia.
Garuae Pass – North Fakarava
This is the widest pass in all of French Polynesia and the ultimate spot for adrenaline-fueled drift dives. Let the current carry you through schools of pelagic fish, trevallies, leopard rays, and—most famously—walls of grey reef sharks. The visibility is crystal-clear and the marine life, truly spectacular.
👉 Top Tip: Dive with Top dive Fakarava, a highly recommended dive center known for its top-quality equipment, friendly team, and relaxed atmosphere.
Tumakohua Pass – South Fakarava (Tetamanu)
In the south, the vibe is more intimate and serene—yet just as breathtaking. Dives here are usually done in small groups, with less current but an incredible concentration of marine life. Watch in awe as blacktip reef sharks, and occasionally hammerheads, glide past vibrant coral gardens. The peaceful setting gives the whole experience a magical, almost mystical feeling.
👉 Bonus Experience: Try a night dive with Tetamonu Diving—a surreal adventure beneath the stars in complete lagoon silence. They even offer pick-up from your accommodation, especially if you’re staying at Sabrina’s guesthouse, a true hidden gem in paradise.
2. Snorkeling in the Fakarava Lagoon – North and South
Fakarava is also a snorkeler’s dream, offering breathtaking underwater scenery whether you’re in the north or the south of the atoll. Each area delivers a unique experience, here are our favorite snorkeling spots in both regions.
North Fakarava – Around Rotoava
In the north, snorkeling is calm and accessible, ideal for beginners or a laid-back outing between sunbathing sessions. We highly recommend snorkeling around the motus near Rotoava, especially those reachable by kayak or boat excursion from local guesthouses.
Don’t miss the coral garden near PK9 beach, a stunning underwater spot teeming with colorful fish, healthy coral, and even baby blacktip reef sharks. The lagoon here is calm, shallow, and perfect for relaxing snorkel sessions.
South Fakarava – Tetamanu Pass
Down south, it’s a completely different vibe: raw, wild, and intense. Snorkeling near Tetamanu Pass offers the chance to swim alongside sharks in their natural environment, in incredibly clear, surreal blue water. You may also spot Napoleon wrasses, rays, and a variety of coral formations along the outer reef slope.
This is a protected marine area, so the underwater life is rich, vibrant, and absolutely unforgettable.

3. Visit the Village of Tetamanu & the Pink Sands – South Fakarava
Tetamanu is a tiny slice of paradise steeped in history, located at the far south of Fakarava. Once the ancient capital of the atoll, this peaceful village is a hidden gem for travelers seeking authentic Polynesian culture and untouched beauty.
From the moment you arrive, you’ll feel the serene, timeless atmosphere—far removed from the modern world.
What touched us the most? The coral stone church, built in 1874—one of the oldest in all of French Polynesia. With its whitewashed walls and old-world charm, it feels like stepping into another era.
But Tetamanu isn’t just a spiritual place—it’s also perfect for a deep dive into Polynesian culture. Learn about traditional tattoo art, taste delicious local cuisine, and connect with warm, welcoming locals passionate about preserving their heritage.
💡 Don’t miss the iconic Pink Sands (“Sables Roses”) while you’re in Tetamanu! On a sunny day, the colors are out of this world—soft pinks, pristine whites, and crystal-clear turquoise, blending together in a dreamlike setting.
Accessible by boat, often as part of a small excursion from the South Pass, the journey itself is magical. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience just minutes from Tetamanu.
4. Explore the Remote Motus of Fakarava – North
One of the things we loved most about Fakarava was adventuring out to the isolated motus that surround the atoll. These tiny white-sand islets, fringed with palm trees and surrounded by crystal-clear turquoise water, are simply magical.
It’s the kind of place where time stands still. You’ll usually arrive by boat or kayak, lay your towel under a coconut tree, and then… pure silence—just the sound of the waves and birds.
It’s perfect for a relaxing day in paradise: snorkeling in calm, shallow waters, enjoying a picnic with your feet in the lagoon, or simply soaking in the feeling of being completely alone in nature.
At times, it felt like we had our own private deserted island—and that’s a rare kind of luxury.
Fakarava’s untouched, wild motus gave us unforgettable moments of peace and beauty that we’ll never forget.
5. Visit the Pearl Farms of Fakarava – North
During your stay in Fakarava, we highly recommend a visit to Havaiki Pearls, an authentic pearl farm set right in the heart of the lagoon. It’s the perfect opportunity to dive into the fascinating world of Tahitian black pearls.
Here, you’ll learn about the entire process, from grafting to harvest, while discovering how the oysters are carefully cultivated for up to 18 months following responsible aquaculture practices. The team is passionate and incredibly welcoming, sharing their deep love for this traditional Polynesian craft.
💡 Bonus: You can purchase pearls and handcrafted jewelry directly on-site—a beautiful, authentic souvenir
6. Explore Fakarava’s Lagoon by Jet Ski – North
Exploring Fakarava by jet ski is hands down one of the most exhilarating experiences you can have on the atoll. We highly recommend it if you’re looking for a mix of thrill, adventure, and raw natural beauty.
What did we love most? Racing across turquoise waters, weaving between wild motus, and stopping to snorkel at remote, untouched spots. You truly feel like you’re alone in paradise—sometimes even crossing paths with dolphins or rays along the way.
Our guide was amazing—friendly, knowledgeable, and full of stories about the marine life and local culture. And that feeling of freedom you get on a jet ski? It’s unmatched, even compared to boat tours or snorkeling.
👉 If you’re craving movement, excitement, and a fresh way to discover Fakarava, this is an absolute must-do activity.
7. Explore Northern Fakarava by Quad Bike – North
Riding a quad bike through northern Fakarava was one of our favorite adventures on the atoll. There’s nothing like the feeling of freedom as you cruise along sandy trails lined with coconut palms, deserted beaches, and stunning views of the turquoise lagoon.
Along the way, we stopped to admire Garuae Pass—the largest pass in all of French Polynesia—a true natural wonder. We also visited the Tainoka marae, a sacred ancient site full of history and spiritual energy.
What made this experience truly special was the mix of thrill, cultural immersion, and off-the-beaten-path exploration. Quad biking lets you discover hidden corners of Fakarava that you wouldn’t see otherwise—making it a must-do for adventurous travelers looking to connect with the island’s wild beauty.
Final Tips: How Many Days to Spend in Fakarava? To fully enjoy everything Fakarava has to offer, we highly recommend staying at least 4 to 5 days on the atoll. Here’s why:
3 Days in the North
This is where you’ll find most family-run guesthouses, the main village of Rotoava, quad and jet ski excursions, peaceful beaches, and some of the best snorkeling spots in the lagoon.
2 Days in the South (Tetamanu)
Spend time exploring the legendary South Pass, diving or snorkeling in one of the most vibrant coral gardens in French Polynesia, visiting the historic coral church, and soaking in the peaceful, remote atmosphere of this untouched paradise.
