Guide by French Polynesia residents Taha'a & Raiatea — shared lagoon Updated 2026

Taha'a is nicknamed the vanilla island — and it earns the title. The scent literally floats in the air the moment you approach the coast. But Taha'a is far more than vanilla: an absolute-blue lagoon shared with Raiatea, one of the most beautiful coral gardens in Polynesia, family-run pearl farms, award-winning rum distilleries, and deserted motus where you feel completely alone in the world.

The island has no airport — you can only reach it by boat from Raiatea (30 minutes). Which makes it preserved, authentic, sheltered from mass tourism. You sleep in Raiatea or directly at a pension on the island, and explore Taha'a on a day excursion or by staying a few nights.

Taha'a — the Vanilla Island with an Absolute Lagoon

Our honest take · French Polynesia residents

I stayed at Pension Hanavei in Taha'a — and it was incredible. The island has something rare that few places in Polynesia still have: total authenticity, people who genuinely live off their land and their lagoon, and a preserved nature you no longer find in Bora Bora or even Huahine. The scent of vanilla drifting through the villages from morning to night — it's an olfactory memory that stays with you for years.

Taha'a can be visited in a day from Raiatea if you're short on time — but to truly experience it, you need to sleep there for at least two nights. That's when you understand why this island fully deserves its nickname.

Tautau Coral Garden — Unforgettable Snorkeling in Taha'a

02 · Snorkeling · Included in excursion · Free entry · 45 min

Tautau — the Polynesian drift

The Tautau coral garden is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved in all of French Polynesia. The concept is simple and magical: you let yourself be carried by the current through an ecosystem of extraordinary richness — multicoloured corals, schools of tropical fish, rays, blacktip reef sharks. The water is breathtakingly clear.

This is not static snorkeling — it's a drift, carried by the current, a total immersion in a giant natural aquarium. Species appear one after another, colours explode, and you emerge from the water with dozens of photos and memories that last for years. You'll need three things: your camera, your mask and snorkel, and water shoes.

Practical

Included in most lagoon excursions from Raiatea. Snorkeling equipment provided. Accessible to all levels — the current does the work. This corner of paradise sits between two motus of Taha'a.

Vanilla Plantations in Taha'a — the World's Finest Vanilla

03 · Guided tour · Free entry · 45 min

Vanilla tahitensis — an exceptional orchid

Taha'a fully earns its nickname — the vanilla of Taha'a is considered one of the finest in the world. The Vanilla tahitensis orchid has been cultivated here for generations, in plantations climbing up hillsides in the shade of support trees. Each flower must be hand-pollinated individually during the few hours it is open — usually in the morning. That's what makes Tahitian vanilla so precious.

Three plantations to visit

Fare Vanira — the historic vanilla plantation. Fascinating guided tour of the complete cycle: hand-pollination, drying, fermentation. When the flowering season is underway, you can witness the "marriage" of vanilla — hand-pollination up close. Derivative products (extracts, vanilla sugar, cosmetics) available on site.

Tahitian Vanilla by Taha'a — family plantation established for several generations. Guided tour by the owners themselves. When the season allows, live pollination demonstration. On sale: vacuum-packed vanilla, vanilla extract, honey, artisan monoï.

Vanilla Prod Shop — plantation tour and local products. Free entry, 45 minutes. Honey, vanilla, monoï artisanal — all sold directly on site. An enriching experience for enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.

Did you know?

A vanilla flower opens for only a few hours per day. Each one is pollinated by hand, individually. This extraordinary artisanal work is what makes Taha'a vanilla so rare and expensive — and so worth experiencing at the source.

Champon Pearl Farm — Tahitian Black Pearls

04 · Guided tour · Free entry · 45 min

Champon — an authentic family pearl farm

The Champon Pearl Farm is a small, authentic family operation — far from the commercial structures that have sometimes lost their soul. Here, pearl oysters are cultivated to produce the famous Tahitian black pearls with a care and passion that come through in every explanation.

The guided tour walks you through the complete process: grafting (inserting a nucleus into the oyster to trigger nacre production), growing (18 months to 2 years at sea), and harvesting. Demonstrations available, especially on weekdays. Jewellery boutique on site — rings, bracelets, necklaces, long necklaces — at farm prices far better than airport or hotel boutiques.

Our advice

If you want to buy a Tahitian black pearl, this is where to do it. Authentic quality, fair prices, and the full story behind every pearl.

Taha'a Rum Distilleries — Pari Pari & Manao

05 · Visit & tasting · Free entry · 45 min each

Distillerie Pari Pari — agricultural gold medal 2019

Distillerie Pari Pari is one of the unmissable stops on the Taha'a circuit. Gold medal at the 2019 agricultural competition, this artisan distillery produces exceptional agricultural rum from locally grown sugarcane. The visit takes you through the traditional distillation process — from field to bottle. And after the tour, you can have a drink on-site at the Fare Miti, the bar attached to the distillery — a perfect moment facing the lagoon to taste the house cuvées. Spirits and blended juices available to purchase.

Rhumerie Manao — the island's other must-visit

Boutique Manao is Taha'a's other renowned distillery, known for its award-winning rums, gins and other creations. Guided tour of sugarcane juice production and the full rum-making process. Several flavours and styles are featured. A pay-at-the-bar minibar is available to refresh yourself and try the house creations. Products sold directly on site.

Our advice

If your itinerary only allows one distillery: choose Pari Pari for the medal and the Fare Miti bar. If you have time: visit both — each has its own character and distinct cuvées.

Private Motu, Coprah & Sharks — Authentic Polynesia

06 · Full day · Included in excursion · Free entry

Lunch feet-in-the-water & encounter with reef sharks

Head to the north of Taha'a — a private motu of white sand surrounded by turquoise water. On the programme: a coprah demonstration (coconut show), an essential activity for understanding Polynesian culture. Then lunch feet in the water, in a joyful local atmosphere. On the menu: Tahitian raw fish in coconut milk, taro, manioc, sweet potato, vegetables and seasonal fruit. Local dancers and musicians offer a Polynesian performance. About 2 hours.

And to finish: an encounter with reef sharks in shallow crystal-clear water. Harmless reef sharks gliding a few metres away in their natural habitat. Fascinating, slightly thrilling, unforgettable. One of the highlights of the day.

No danger

Blacktip reef sharks — not aggressive towards humans. The experience is led by experienced local guides who know these animals perfectly.

Practical Information — Taha'a Island

How to get to Taha'a

Taha'a has no airport. Access is exclusively by boat from Raiatea — about 30 minutes crossing. Regular shuttles connect the two islands. Most Taha'a accommodations organise the shuttle from Raiatea port. For day excursions, the boat is included in the programme.

Day trip or stay on the island?

Our recommendation

Short trip (under 10 days): day excursion with Are Tours from Raiatea — you'll see the essentials in one memorable day. More time available: stay 2 to 3 nights on the island (Pension Hanavei, Anahata, Le Taha'a Pearl) — the island takes on a completely different dimension when you experience it from the inside.

Are there beaches in Taha'a?

Taha'a is not a beach island — no long white sand beach accessible from your hotel. But that's not a reason to miss out: motu excursions on the lagoon deliver exactly that — white sand, turquoise water, sunshine. Le Taha'a by Pearl Resorts has a private motu, Motu Mahana, with an idyllic white sand beach accessible to hotel guests. For other accommodations, day excursions systematically include a motu stop.

Taha'a or Bora Bora — which one?

Our honest answer

The two are complementary — ideally, do both. Taha'a is more authentic (vanilla, distilleries, pearl farms, genuine local life) but has only one true luxury overwater hotel (Le Taha'a by Pearl Resorts). Bora Bora remains iconic, with several major overwater properties and the definitive honeymoon experience. Our advice: 2–3 nights in Taha'a + 3–4 nights in Bora Bora — two completely different atmospheres. Taha'a is a good alternative to Bora Bora if budget is tight, but Bora Bora is in a category of its own for honeymoons.

Where to stay in Taha'a

I stayed there — and it was incredible. Rare authenticity, passionate hosts, total immersion in Taha'a life. One of our favourite addresses in all of French Polynesia. Not luxurious in the conventional sense, but rich in human warmth and natural beauty that rivals any palace.
