Tahiti is large — more than 120 km of road to drive around it, and two hours by car between the airport and the far end of the peninsula. Choosing a hotel in Tahiti is not simply choosing a nice address; it is choosing the right base for your stopover.
A night before your return flight? Stay near the airport. Taking the ferry to Moorea the next morning? Sleep in central Papeete, right across from the terminal. Driving around the island? Stop over on the north-east coast or at Teahupo'o. Here are our tested addresses, area by area.

Near the Airport and Central Papeete
Faa'a airport and central Papeete are side by side — just a few minutes by road. This is the most practical area for a first night after a long flight, a last night before the return, or a night before catching the ferry to Moorea. Two options depending on what you need: a luxury hotel minutes from the airport, or a central Papeete hotel where everything is within walking distance.
InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa
The only overwater bungalows near the airportTahiti's landmark hotel, a 5-minute taxi ride from the airport. Overwater bungalows above a sheltered lagoon, views of Moorea at sunset, and the service quality of a major international chain. We have stayed here: it is the most relaxed way to start or end a trip, without wasting time on the road. Overwater bungalows from around €1,000/night; garden rooms from around €360.
Also a 5-minute taxi from the airport. No overwater bungalows, but a very well-appointed hotel with a beautiful pool facing the lagoon and an excellent standard of service. A reliable option for a comfortable transit night — especially if you collect Hilton Honors points.
The best location in Papeete if you are taking the ferry to Moorea the next morning: the terminal is right across the road. Walk over with your luggage and board. The market and marina are a few minutes on foot, and the rooftop is perfect for a sunset drink.
Same logic: right in the city centre, everything within walking distance. Papeete market, the Moorea ferry and the marina are all nearby. Ideal for a car-free night in town — browse the market in the morning, dine on the waterfront in the evening.
Check Hotel Reva pricesLate arrival or very early departure: stay airport-side (InterContinental, Hilton). Ferry to Moorea the next morning or want to explore Papeete on foot: stay at the Kon Tiki or Reva. Either way, both areas are only a few minutes apart.
The North-east Coast — Wild Tahiti, Black Sand & Papenoo Valley
As soon as you leave Papeete heading east, Tahiti changes completely: volcanic black sand beaches, mountains plunging into the ocean, and the entrance to the Papenoo valley — the largest on the island — crossed by 4x4 between rivers and waterfalls. This is rawer, quieter Tahiti, far from the capital's bustle.
The Pearl Tahiti sits on a black sand beach facing the ocean along this wilder coastline. We have stayed here: a very beautiful hotel, no overwater bungalows, but the service and attention to detail that characterise Pearl Resorts — our favourite group in French Polynesia. The ideal base for exploring the Papenoo valley and the east coast, while enjoying upscale surroundings.
Driving Around the Island
To discover the real Tahiti, you need a car. The island tour can be done in a day, but we recommend spreading it over two or three days and changing accommodation along the way — one night on the north-east coast, then Teahupo'o and the peninsula the next day. Without a car, you will be limited to Papeete and its immediate surroundings.

The Tahiti Lagoon Resort is off-centre relative to Papeete and the airport — not the right address for a transit night, but a good base if you have a car and want to explore the island. It reopened in 2026 after renovation and offers overwater bungalows from around €750/night and garden rooms from around €300.
Staying at Teahupo'o, on the Peninsula
Teahupo'o is at the end of the road, at the southern tip of the Tahiti Iti peninsula, about 1h30 from Papeete by car. The wave that hosted the 2024 Olympic Games, an authentic village and still-wild nature. Making the return trip from Papeete in a single day means a lot of driving — staying on the spot lets you take your time in the village, see the wave at different moments of the day and combine your stay with a boat excursion. It is the ideal stopover on the island circuit.
Without question the most beautiful property on the peninsula. Stunning treehouses in total immersion in Polynesian nature — a night out of time. This is the upscale version of Teahupo'o: perfect for a couple's escape or a memorable stopover on the island tour.
Check Vanira Lodge pricesThe location is exceptional: directly facing the Teahupo'o wave. Havae Lodge is a hostel with two private rooms and the rest in dormitories. Run by Rairoa, this is where professional surfers gather — a unique international atmosphere, steps from the break. The ideal address for surfers, solo travellers and budget-conscious guests who want to experience the peninsula from the inside.
