To truly experience Tahiti, rent a car and drive the island. You’ll discover waterfalls, black sand beaches, lush valleys, and small traditional villages. Tahiti offers more diversity than many expect.

If you’re also visiting Moorea, you can take your rental car on the ferry (40 minutes). It’s cheaper to rent in Tahiti and bring your car across, rather than renting again on Moorea.

Plan your own 10-day itinerary in French Polynesia or go through a travel agency?

We love planning our own trips, my wife and I are truly passionate about travel. And let’s be honest, it would be a bit ironic for travel bloggers like us to use a travel agency! That said, organizing a trip to French Polynesia can be a bit more challenging than usual. There are so many islands to choose from, and it’s not exactly a destination you visit every other weekend.

If you’re traveling off-season, have time to spare, or are going the budget route (like staying with locals, hitchhiking, etc.), then planning everything yourself is totally doable and probably the best option. If you’re happy visiting just a few islands say, Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora over two weeks and taking your time, organizing it on your own is quite simple.

But if you’re planning a honeymoon in French Polynesia, want to explore more remote or lesser-known islands, switch between archipelagos, or if your time is limited, then working with a reliable local agency really makes a lot of sense. Why? Because agencies can negotiate better rates with international and domestic airlines, hotels, taxis, and more. Most importantly, if anything goes wrong, like a flight delay, missed connection, or accommodation issue, you have someone you can call 24/7 who’s there to help.

intercontinental-bora-bora-sunset

On top of that, a local travel agency will greatly help with planning and optimizing how many days to spend on each island, especially based on inter-island flight schedules with airlines like Air Tahiti or Air Moana. They can also assist with last-minute changes due to weather—something that happens quite often on smaller islands like Maupiti, where flights are frequently canceled in bad weather.

Of course, agencies do take a commission, but they also get significant discounts thanks to the volume of business they bring to their partners. That said, it’s important not to go with just any agency or simply the cheapest one. We highly recommend choosing a local agency based in Tahiti, as they have much deeper knowledge of the islands and are far more responsive if anything needs to be adjusted on short notice.

When you request a quote from an agency, you can always compare the total price with what it would cost to book everything yourself. Just don’t forget to include all the extras inter-island flights, airport transfers, boat shuttles, taxis, etc. those small costs add up quickly. You’ll often find the overall price is very similar. That’s the agencies’ main selling point: you pay about the same, but with expert advice and added peace of mind.

Lastly, the best way to lower the cost of your trip to French Polynesia is to book about 10 months in advance. It’s a bit of a shame to try to “save €500” on a once-in-a-lifetime €5,000 trip, especially knowing that booking early can reduce your total cost by as much as 30%.

Recommended Itinerary for a 10 days Trip to French Polynesia

Let’s start with the basics, booking your international flight. We’ve written a detailed article all about it.

👉There, you’ll find everything you need to know about the best time to visit and tips to find the cheapest ✈️ Flight from Los Angeles to Tahiti.

Keep in mind that you’ll need to spend at least two full weeks in French Polynesia around two and a half weeks total when you include the long-haul travel from France.

Days 1–3: Explore Tahiti – A Must-Visit Island, Not Just a Stopover in French Polynesia

Tahiti is often seen as the entry point to any French Polynesia trip, but it’s so much more than a layover. Too often overlooked, Tahiti deserves a spot on your itinerary. With its lush landscapes, vibrant local culture, and hidden gems, it’s the perfect place to kick off your island adventure.

You’ll feel the Polynesian spirit as soon as you land, locals singing, ukuleles playing, and flower necklaces all around. Tahiti is alive, colorful, and full of surprises.

👉One of the best activity we recommend is a Tandem Skydive over Tahiti mountain and lagoon, definitely incredible experience.

Arriving in Tahiti: What You Need to Know

Most international flights (especially from Paris or Los Angeles) arrive late at night or early in the morning. After a long-haul economy flight, give yourself time to rest before jumping into your trip.

Taxis are available 24/7 at the airport (about €30 / $35 to downtown Papeete), or check with your hotel about shuttle options. Public transportation is unavailable at night or on Sundays, so plan ahead.

Where to Stay in Papeete

We recommend spending your first night in downtown Papeete, especially if you’re arriving late. Our favorite? The Kon Tiki Boutique Hotel – brand new, central, fairly priced, and perfectly adapted to nighttime arrivals. (It’s where we personally always stay before heading to Moorea.)

👉 Honest tip: Papeete isn’t the most beautiful city. The marina is charming for a drink or dinner, but the downtown area feels a bit rundown, especially at night. You’ll see signs of poverty, much like in any western city. So don’t spend all three days in Papeete, there’s much more to explore elsewhere.

If nightlife isn’t your priority, you might prefer staying outside the city. The Hilton Tahiti is a fantastic option—located between the airport and Papeete, it’s only a 7-minute drive from both. With a huge pool, beautiful setting, and proximity to downtown, it’s the best of both worlds.

Start the Day at Papeete Market

Kick off your trip with a visit to the famous Papeete Public Market. This vibrant, sensory-rich space offers a real taste of Polynesian culture: music, colors, tropical fruits, local crafts, and smiling faces everywhere. It’s a great place to sample local foods and spot souvenirs to pick up later.

🕗 Pro tip: Go in the morning before it gets hot. On Sundays, the market closes early, around 10 a.m.

Road Trip Around Tahiti

To truly experience the magic of Tahiti, rent a car and explore the island at your own pace. You’ll uncover a side of the island that few tourists see, hidden waterfalls, wild black-sand beaches, lush mountain valleys, and charming local villages that make the journey just as rewarding as the destination. Tahiti is full of contrasts, and a road trip is the best way to take it all in.

Planning to visit Moorea too? Good news, you can bring your rental car on the ferry (about 40 minutes). It’s often cheaper and more convenient to rent your vehicle in Tahiti and take it across, instead of renting a second car on Moorea.

👉 For those who want to dive even deeper into the island’s untamed beauty, don’t miss our full-day Safari 4×4 Tour around Tahiti—an unforgettable off-road adventure through jungle trails, rivers, and panoramic viewpoints.

Escape to the Peninsula: Teahupo’o

For a deeper, more authentic Polynesian experience, spend 1 or 2 nights on the Tahiti Iti peninsula, in the legendary village of Teahupo’o. Famous for its mythical surf break—and host of the 2024 Olympic surfing event—this remote corner of the island is wild, peaceful, and absolutely breathtaking.

Teahupo’o is hands-down our favorite place in Tahiti. If you want to feel the real Polynesia, don’t skip it.

And while you’re there, don’t miss the epic boat tour to watch the Teahupo’o wave from the water—a front-row seat to one of the world’s most powerful and iconic surf spots.

Whale Watching in Tahiti (August–November)

If you’re visiting between August and November, don’t miss a whale watching excursion—it’s one of the most magical experiences you can have in French Polynesia. Tahiti is among the best places in the world to see humpback whales up close, often just meters from the boat.

Days 3–7: Moorea – Turquoise Lagoons & Lush Mountains, Just 30 Minutes from Tahiti

Just a short ferry ride from Tahiti, Moorea is a tropical paradise that blends adventure and relaxation like no other. With emerald peaks, crystal-clear lagoons, and a laid-back island vibe, Moorea is often a favorite among travelers. You can also book a Jetski tour it’s one of the best spot in Polynesia to do it.

Whether you’re snorkeling with sharks, hiking scenic trails, or enjoying a cocktail by the water, this island has something for everyone.

How to Get to Moorea from Tahiti

Moorea is located just 45 minutes from Tahiti by ferry, making it incredibly easy to reach. There are several ferry companies to choose from:

Aremiti – Faster, more daily departures, slightly more expensive

Terevau – Reliable, budget-friendly

Vaearai – A newer alternative, comfortable and efficient

⏰ Ferries run from around 5:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily.

With a rental car? Be sure to book your vehicle spot at least one day in advance.

On foot or with a scooter? You can buy your ticket at the terminal about 30 minutes before departure.

Days 7–10: Bora Bora – The Iconic Pearl of the Pacific (Just 1 Hour from Tahiti or Moorea)

Bora Bora, the legendary Pearl of the Pacific, is famous worldwide for its turquoise lagoons and sharks and rays, luxury resorts, and breathtaking scenery. It’s the perfect place to end your trip with a mix of relaxation, adventure, and unforgettable beauty.

How to Get to Bora Bora from Tahiti or Moorea

Getting to Bora Bora is easy. The fastest option is a 50-minute domestic flight with Air Tahiti, available from both Tahiti and Moorea. Flights are frequent, but it’s best to book in advance—especially during high season.

Once you land, airport shuttles transfer guests from the motu (islet where the airport is located) to the main island or directly to your hotel. Luxury resorts often offer private boat transfers, which are part of the experience!

Lagoon Tour: The Must-Do Activity in Bora Bora

No trip to Bora Bora is complete without a full-day lagoon tour—it’s the most iconic and unforgettable way to explore what makes this island truly magical. Bora Bora’s lagoon is world-famous for its surreal shades of blue, and this excursion lets you dive right into the heart of it.

Here’s what you can look forward to:
Snorkel in vibrant coral gardens, home to hundreds of tropical fish species—like swimming in a living aquarium.
Glide alongside graceful manta rays, some with wingspans over 2 meters, as they elegantly cruise through the water.
Spot blacktip reef sharks up close—completely safe and guided by professionals, this moment is thrilling yet serene.

Many tours also include a traditional Polynesian picnic on a private motu (islet), with fresh fish, coconut bread, and local music. Others offer stops to feed rays, learn about marine conservation, or enjoy a floating bar over the reef. It’s the perfect blend of adventure, culture, and postcard-perfect relaxation.

This is hands down the #1 must-do activity in Bora Bora, whether you’re on a honeymoon or a family trip, it’s an experience you’ll remember forever.

Hiking with Panoramic Views in Bora Bora

While Bora Bora is often celebrated for its lagoon and luxury resorts, its rugged interior offers some of the most rewarding hiking experiences in French Polynesia. If you’re looking to balance lazy beach days with adventure, trekking to the island’s iconic peaks is a must.

🏞️ Mount Pahia & Mount Otemanu

These are Bora Bora’s two most famous summits, offering breathtaking 360° views of the island, its reef-fringed lagoon, and the surrounding motus.

  • Mount Pahia is a slightly more accessible climb but still requires good physical condition. You’ll navigate through lush jungle, root-covered paths, and steep ridgelines.

  • Mount Otemanu, the highest point on the island at 727 meters, is technically more challenging and cannot be climbed all the way to the summit due to vertical rock faces. But guided hikes can take you to viewpoints partway up, where you’ll get jaw-dropping panoramic vistas.

💡 Important tip: These hikes are not well-marked, can be slippery, and involve some scrambling, especially after rainfall. That’s why we strongly recommend hiring a certified local guide. Not only will they ensure your safety, but they’ll also enrich your hike with stories about Polynesian legends, ancient marae (temples), native plants, and wartime history.

👉 This is your chance to see the wild, untouched side of Bora Bora, far from the resorts and tourist crowds. It’s an experience that rewards effort with perspective—both literally and figuratively.

Bora Bora Helicopter Tours – See Paradise from Above

If there’s one splurge we’ll never forget, it’s the helicopter tour over Bora Bora. Seeing the island from above is absolutely surreal—the lagoon turns into a watercolor of blues, Mount Otemanu rises dramatically from the center, and overwater bungalows dot the shoreline like a postcard come to life. And if you opt for the extended flight, you’ll even get to see the heart-shaped atoll of Tupai, which is just as magical as it sounds.

We did this during our honeymoon in 2023, and honestly, it was one of the most emotional and awe-inspiring moments of our trip. Just the two of us, floating above paradise, completely disconnected from time—it felt like a dream. The views, the silence, the scale of it all… we still talk about it months later. Whether you’re celebrating something special or just want to live a once-in-a-lifetime moment, this is 100% worth it.

Stay in an Overwater Bungalow: A Must in Bora Bora

If you’re coming all the way to Bora Bora staying in an overwater bungalow is the ultimate dream—and honestly, it’s worth every moment. Imagine waking up surrounded by the calm, clear waters of the lagoon, with nothing but ocean views and the sound of gentle waves beneath your feet. Step out onto your private deck, take a morning dip straight from your room, and watch the lagoon shift from turquoise to deep blue as the sun rises.

It’s not just the location that makes it special—the service is next-level. From private boat transfers to in-room breakfasts delivered by canoe, the attention to detail makes you feel like you’re in a movie. And the view of Mount Otemanu towering in the distance from your bungalow? Absolutely unforgettable.

Whether you’re celebrating your honeymoon, a special occasion, or simply want to indulge in something extraordinary, this is a truly unique experience and one that defines the Bora Bora magic everyone talks about.

❓ FAQ – Planning a 10-Day Itinerary in French Polynesia

Is 10 days enough to visit French Polynesia?

➡️ Yes! While you’ll only scratch the surface of this stunning destination, 10 days is perfect for visiting 2 to 3 islands—typically Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora. It gives you a balance of relaxation, adventure, and culture without feeling rushed.

Which islands should I include in a 10-day trip?

➡️We recommend this classic trio:

  • Tahiti (Days 1–3): Culture, markets, waterfalls, and your international arrival hub.

  • Moorea (Days 3–7): Mountains, lush valleys, hiking, snorkeling, and whale watching (in season).

  • Bora Bora (Days 7–10): Overwater bungalows, turquoise lagoons, and luxury vibes.

Optional: Replace Bora Bora with a more off-the-beaten-path island like Rangiroa or Huahine if you prefer diving or fewer crowds.

What’s the best travel agency to book a trip to Tahiti?

➡️Tahiti ⇄ Moorea: 45-minute ferry, several departures daily.

➡️Tahiti ⇄ Other islands (Bora Bora, Rangiroa, etc.): 45–70 minute flights with Air Tahiti.
Pro tip: Book inter-island flights early, especially in high season.

Is French Polynesia expensive?

➡️It can be—but there are options for every budget.

  • Luxury: Overwater bungalows, private excursions, fine dining.

  • Mid-range: Guesthouses, car/scooter rental, local food trucks (“roulottes”).

  • Budget: Pension stays, public beaches, free hiking trails, and local snacks from markets. You can absolutely tailor your trip to fit your budget with some smart planning.

When is the best time to visit?

➡️Dry season: May to October (best weather, cooler temps, whale season)

➡️Wet season: November to April (warmer, more rain, fewer tourists) For a 10-day trip, August to October is ideal—perfect mix of weather, marine life, and activities.
