High season in French Polynesia runs July, August and September. The usual rule: if you haven't booked 6 to 12 months in advance, it's too late — flights are sold out, accommodation is full, prices are through the roof. That's largely true. But not entirely.
Good news for summer 2026: French Bee has reopened seats on the Paris → Papeete route for July and August at around €1,400 return. That first barrier — the international flight — is now partially lifted. And once you have your flight, there are real solutions to build a great trip — as long as you stay flexible. We live on Moorea. We know the islands, the operators, what's available and what isn't. Here's our honest advice.
The International Flight — The Good News for Summer 2026
The international flight is the single biggest obstacle to a last-minute trip to French Polynesia. In a normal high season, Paris–Papeete flights in July–August are either sold out or priced above €2,500 return. But 2026 is different — and this is particularly good news for travellers flying from Europe.
Low-cost long-haul airline French Bee (Paris Orly) has reopened seats on the Paris → Papeete route for July and August 2026, from around €1,400 return. For those flying from Europe, this is the most affordable option available in high season. These seats open approximately one month before departure — watch and book the moment a seat appears.
French Bee — what you need to know
French Bee is a low-cost carrier — the base fare may not include checked luggage or meals. Always calculate the all-in price before comparing with Air Tahiti Nui or Air France. That said, at €1,400 return in peak summer, no other airline comes close. For those flying from Europe, this is currently the only realistic option at a reasonable price in peak season.
Set a price alert on Google Flights or Kayak for the Paris Orly → Papeete route. The moment a French Bee seat appears under €1,500 return, book it immediately — these windows disappear fast. Book the flight first, then organise everything else around it.

Last-minute accommodation in high season is the real challenge. The big Bora Bora hotels and premium overwater bungalows have been fully booked for months. But contrary to what you might think, availability does exist — as long as you know where to look and stay flexible.
Two things work in your favour: last-minute cancellations (travellers cancelling for personal or health reasons) and new accommodation coming online only a few weeks before the season — freshly built or newly renovated properties that simply weren't listed when most people started planning their trip.
Where to look last minute
For the main islands (Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora), Booking and Airbnb work well. Set alerts, filter for "free cancellation" and refresh regularly. On Airbnb in particular, availability appears frequently due to cancellations.
For lesser-known islands or off-platform accommodation, local agencies are essential. They know real-time availability, have direct relationships with operators, and can find options that don't appear anywhere online. Some agencies still have capacity for summer 2026 — contact them directly.
An often-overlooked opportunity: some properties only list their availability from May–June, knowing the high season is here. Newly built addresses, just-finished renovations — you can stumble across a real gem that nobody has seen because it simply wasn't online when most people were planning.
Flexibility — the absolute rule
Last minute means you cannot start with a fixed list of specific accommodations. The right approach is the reverse: choose your island based on what accommodation is available, not the other way around. If a great option appears on Huahine, go to Huahine. If Rangiroa has a good availability, go to Rangiroa. That flexibility is what separates a great trip from a disappointing one.

Our recommended circuit
Last minute, focus first on the Tahiti · Moorea · Bora Bora triangle. These three islands cover the essentials of French Polynesia and will almost always have something available. Then add a complementary island based on what's open: Raiatea/Taha'a, Huahine or Rangiroa.
Raiatea and Taha'a: same lagoon, far fewer tourists, just as beautiful. Great availability. Huahine: the authentic island, often available because it's less well-known internationally. A real gem for those who want something genuinely off the beaten path. Rangiroa: watch for cancellations — when a slot opens, it's a rare opportunity.

Getting between islands last minute
For local flights (Air Tahiti, Air Moana), availability is tight in high season — watch and book the moment a seat opens. The Apetahi Express ferry (connecting Papeete, Huahine, Raiatea, Taha'a, Bora Bora and Maupiti) doesn't require booking far in advance — it's an excellent fallback when local flights are full.

Most travellers don't consider a cruise when they think of French Polynesia — and that's a mistake. A cabin cruise (shared cabin on a catamaran, or full charter) is often one of the best last-minute solutions for a simple reason: operators sometimes have unsold cabins a few weeks before departure and offer attractive pricing to fill the boat.

By being flexible on islands and accommodation, you can find excellent value for money — sometimes better than an advance booking for the same dates. The key: don't fixate on a specific property or island, and act immediately when a good opportunity appears.

Our Resident Tips for a Successful Last-Minute Trip
1. Book the flight first — don't wait
The moment a French Bee seat under €1,500 return appears, book it without waiting for the rest to be organised. The flight is the primary barrier. Once you have it, you can build everything else around it.
2. Set all your alerts simultaneously
Google Flights, Kayak, Booking, Airbnb — set alerts on all destinations that interest you. It's a deal-hunting exercise that requires vigilance, but real opportunities do exist.
3. Always choose free cancellation
Last minute, systematically prioritise accommodation with free cancellation. It lets you lock in availability the moment it appears, then release it if something better comes along.
4. Contact local experts
Local travel agencies know real-time availability — off-platform accommodation, operators who just had a cancellation, deals that aren't listed online. That's our added value as residents: we know what's available and what isn't.

5. Consider a cabin cruise
If you can't find satisfying accommodation across multiple islands, seriously consider a cabin cruise. One operator, different lagoons every day, and often last-minute cabin availability a few weeks before departure. An underestimated option that fits a last-minute mindset perfectly.
6. Stay flexible on islands
The absolute rule for last-minute travel in French Polynesia: choose your island based on what's available, not the other way around. If Huahine has great availability and Bora Bora is full, go to Huahine. You won't be disappointed — every island in French Polynesia has something exceptional to offer.
7. The mistakes to avoid
Last minute, availability changes fast. If you lock in accommodation without free cancellation and a better option appears the next day, you're stuck. Always prioritise cancellable options.
Waiting endlessly for a Bora Bora slot in peak season is the classic trap. You lose time — and miss great alternatives like Huahine or Raiatea. If Bora Bora isn't available, move on immediately.
Family pensions (pensions de famille) are often the best last-minute option: cheaper, more available, and often more authentic than big hotels. On islands like Huahine, Raiatea or Rangiroa, these are the addresses that still have rooms when everything else is full. Don't dismiss them.
When inter-island flights are full or too expensive, many people give up on visiting multiple islands.
